I M P O R TA N C E Studies show that child and adolescent therapy is more effective when the parents are involved. Parents involvement improves treatment observance and attendance. Parent-adolescent and family therapy treatment plans have been proven to have better results than teens who received individual therapy. Parents can be taught the same skills by the therapist that the child is learning allowed for a shared understanding between parent and child. Parents involvement also allows for problematic family dynamics to be brought to the forefront, discussed, and resolved more quickly. Parent s need to recognize that their child’s mental health needs do not exist in a sphere outside of the family. (Hayes, 2022)
B A R R I E R S Getting through barriers to family engagement is a big key to helping my clients and not having them miss out on important parts of therapy that are very much needed. Allow Allow for multiple way for communication between myself and the family (phone, text, email, notes, etc.) Be Be available to meet whenever the family needs me after work/school. During lunch time, via video call. Fine If there is a language barrier, then fine an interpreter if necessary or technology to help with interpretation.
