Discussion 1:1 Intro Consider the following as you prepare your post: 1) What argument from Wheelan’s text do you find most surprising? Many arguments in Wheelan’s text will leave one wondering, especially when you’re new to statistics and data analysis. Wheelan’s text is an excellent example of the possibilities in statistics, the understanding of statistics, and how there is more to be known about the facts. Statistics involves the data and information we encounter on a day-to-day basis; it is knowing how to conceptualize data and interpret that data. In Wheelan’s text, there was one argument that stood out to me in the Description and Comparison section where the following was stated “We evaluate the academic performance of high school and college students using a grade point average, or GPA. A letter grade is assigned a point value; typically, an A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3, a C is worth 2, and so on. By graduation, when high school students are applying to college and college students are looking for jobs, the grade point average is a handy tool for assessing their academic potential. Someone who has a 3.77 GPA is a stronger student than someone at the same school with a 2.5 GPA. That makes it a nice descriptive statistic. It’s easy to compare across students.” He goes on to state that it’s not perfect, the GPA does not reflect the difficulty of the courses that different students may have taken. How can we compare a student with a 3.4 GPA in classes that appear to be relatively nonchallenging with a student with a 2.9 GPA who has taken calculus physics, and other tough subjects?” This argument explains some key facts about statistics, one, using descriptive statistics or any kind of statistics does not give an accurate summary of data all the time. Two, although it may seem easy to compare students using different variables to find their cause, effect, and outcome, however, there are other important factors to take into consideration like the difficulty in courses in which students are taking. Lastly, these methods provide a summary of the data in students which helps to identify patterns and relationships, it may not give a fact to an outcome rather it helps to make informed decisions.
2) What questions does the Wheelan chapter leave you asking? Wheelan’s text is one to ponder about. It leaves me to ask questions like. How can I apply statistics to improve my daily life? How many times a week do I have to work out in the gym to see results? How many students taking this class for the first time completed the class with a B or better in the last 3 years? 3) How do you foresee this course shaping your everyday analysis of ‘things’? I can see this course shaping my everyday analysis of things by becoming more observant and mindful of the decisions I make; I can see myself analyzing everything by conducting research, collecting data, and evaluating the outcomes before concluding. I feel like this course can help me to plan my future, solve problems, and become a more critical thinker.
