1 Analysis of the Affective Reactivity Index for Assessing Irritability in Adolescents Angie Cook Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6111: Advanced Clinical Social Work Practice Dr. Janine Holstein March 23, 2024
2 Analysis of the Affective Reactivity Index for Assessing Irritability in Adolescents The Affective Reactivity Index is an assessment tool to measure irritability in adolescents aged 6 to 17. The questions in the assessment tool address three main aspects: How easily someone gets angry, how often, and how long the irritability lasts (Ezpeleta et al., 2020, p. 40). Rationale for Selecting Affective Reactivity Index Tool This writer selected the ARI Tool due to the tool's ability to assess the presence and severity of irritability when an adolescent presents with mental health conditions. The tool proves reliable through psychometric testing (Ezpeleta et al., 2020, p, 47). The tool is also easy to administer (Stringaris et al., 2012, pp. 1109-1111). Benefits of Using the Affective Reactivity Index Tool with Adolescents Benefits of the ARI include Identifying and monitoring irritability that presents itself in psychiatric disorders of adolescents, allowing for proper interventions. The ARI’s reliability proves it can be used in comparison to different adolescent stages to determine interventions' effectiveness (Stringaris et al., 2012, pp. 1114-1115). Challenges and Limitations of the Affective Reactivity Index Tool ARI's challenges and limitations are based on surveys from the perspectives of parents and teachers. Results may vary when looking at the reliability of the rater. The survey is also short, which may not consider the complete account of the irritability (Stringaris et al., 2012, p. 1115). Conclusion The Affective Reactivity Index (ARI) is a valuable tool for evaluating adolescent irritability. Although the ARI is user-friendly and reliable, its reliance on reported data and limited ability to capture the full context of irritability may necessitate additional assessments.
