Sverapa, a nurse researcher with 9 years experience on an obstetrics unit of a large hospital, explored mothers’ experiences of hydrotherapy in labor. She had developed an interest in this shortly after she gave birth and received hydrotherapy. Sverapa conducted a descriptive phenomenological study of this phenomenon, collecting data by interviewing 9 women in their homes within 3 weeks after delivery. Interviews were audio recorded and lasted, on average, 60 minutes. The interviews began by having mothers respond to the following: “Please describe your experience of hydrotherapy during labor in as much detail as you can remember. Describe all your thoughts, feelings, and perceptions that you wish to share.” Prior to and during data collection, which took place over a 2-month period, Sverapa kept a journal and used it to help her bracket. In analyzing the data, Sverapa identified two key themes describing the essence of mothers’ experiences with hydrotherapy during their labor. These themes focused on mothers’ experiencing an aura of calmness that surrounded them and a heightened feeling of closeness with their infants. She reviewed her themes with four sample members, who agreed with her thematic analysis. She also shared two complete transcripts, her coding scheme, her journal, and her findings with a colleague who had conducted research relating to childbirth; the colleague suggested some minor modifications to her thematic conclusions.
