Select the best answer or answers from the choices given: The white blood cell that releases histamine and other; inflammatory chemicals is the (a) basophil, (b) neutrophil, (c) monocyte, (d) eosinophil,

Expert Solution
Step 1

There are three types of blood cells, red blood cells or the erythrocytes, white blood cells, and platelets. The types of white blood cells are monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and lymphocytes.

Inflammation is defined as the process by which the body launches a biological response to foreign invaders or pathogens, in order to defend the body against infection, injury, and/or disease. There are five cardinal signs of inflammation, rubor- redness, tumour- swelling, calor-heat, dolor- pain, and functio laesa-loss of function.  In response to a tissue injury or a foreign antigen, white blood cells(WBC) involved in inflammatory response releases inflammatory mediators causing the blood vessels to become wide and more blood can reach the site of injury. As a result, more immune cells, the white blood cells, can reach the site to begin the process of healing.

Step 2

In response to an inflammatory reaction or allergic reaction, the number of basophils increases. Basophils are the granulocytes, responsible for secreting histamine when activated by pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), and/or IgE-crosslinking, at the site of inflammation. Histamine is a vasodilator that helps more blood to flow to the tissues, allowing the transport of more WBC, for an effective inflammatory response.

Hence, the correct option is a.
