Question
Name the various parts of periosteal bone.
Expert Solution
Step 1
The rigid hard tissue that consists of abundant hard intracellular components rich in cells are called bones. This intracellular material is composed of calcium phosphate and collagen. The functions of bone include structural support to the body, supports the muscle contraction, mechanical protection to different organs like the brain and acts as a storage of minerals. Bones are structures that are unique to the vertebrates.
Step 2
The fibrous membrane that acts as a covering to the bone is known as periosteum. Periosteum can be divided into two layers: outer fibrous membrane and inner cellular layer.
Outer fibrous membrane:
- Consists of collagen and nerve fibres.
- The blood vessels are embedded in this layer. The branches of these blood vessels also supply to the osteoblasts, that are the bone cells.
Inner layer:
- The inner layer of the periosteum is also referred to as the cambium.
- This layer consists of the bone forming cells or the osteoblasts.
- The inner layer is most prominent during the peak of bone formation, that is during the fetal development and also childhood.
- Bone injuries are healed by the rapid proliferation of the bone cells that develop to form new bone
