Question

In terms of intermolecular forces, explain why the boiling point of Br2(59°C) is lower than that of iodine monochloride ICl (97°C), even though they have nearly the same molar mass.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The forces which mediate the interaction between molecules, including forces of attraction or repulsion which act between atoms and other types of neighboring particles are called intermolecular forces.

Boiling point is directly proportional to the magnitude of  intermolecular forces. Boiling point will be higher for compounds having greater intermolecular forces.
