Question

Explain octet rule ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

In an atom, all the electrons are placed in the atomic orbitals or shells. The arrangement of these electrons across the atomic shell is known as the electronic configuration.

It can be generally given as:

2,8,18,18,32...

Where the maximum number of electrons that are filled in the first atomic orbital is 2. In the 2nd shell maximum number of electrons filled is 8 and so on.

An element forms the different types of chemical bonds with different types of elements to satisfy and complete their electronic configuration if it is not complete.

When the electrons are completely filled by 2 electrons, it is said that the atom has its duplet complete.

When the electrons are completely filled by 8 electrons it is said that the atom has its octet complete.
