Describe shear stress?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Shear stress

When a body undergoes a load and deformation is caused by the stress that is parallel to the surface, such stress is called shear stress. The deformation caused by the shear stress is known as shear strain. Generally, shear stress is represented by τ. The SI unit of the shear stress is ‘Pa’ (Pascal).

The expression for shear stress is,

τ=VA=Vb×d

Here V is the shear force, A is the surface area parallel to the force vector, b is the width and d is the depth of the area.

Forms of shear stress are,

  • Pure shear stress.
  • Beam shear stress.
  • Impact shear stress.
  • Shear stress in fluid.
  • Semi-monocoque shear stress.
