Corona viruses are a type of virus. They structurally appear crown shaped in microscope and that’s why called corona viruses. Corona viruses are common in the different types of animals but rarely an animal coronavirus can infect the humans. There are many types of corona viruses and some of them cause diseases. Some disease causing corona viruses are; middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), etc.
A newly identified type of coronavirus has caused a recent outbreak of the respiratory illness (COVID-19). The novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease is named as SARS-CoV-2. The symptoms of this disease include: fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, diarrhea, headache, muscle aches, and unexplained loss of smell or taste. In the rare cases, COVID-19 can lead to the severe respiratory problems or death. If a person have fever or any kind of respiratory problem such as shortness of breath or coughing then he or she should call the doctor or a health care provider and inform them about the symptoms over the phone before going the hospital or clinic.
The novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) can live for 3 days on the surfaces like steel and plastic. A person can get infected from touching those materials. It survives on cardboard for up to 24 hours and on copper it survives for only four hours. This virus doesn’t linger in the air at the levels to be a risk for most of the people who are not physically near to an infected person. To protect ourselves from this coronavirus we have to practice good hygiene, respiratory etiquette, physical and social distancing.
