cannonball leaving the cannon? (Ignore the height of the cannon above the ground. For now we
will assume it makes little difference)


b) Given your answer for part a, we need to identify the point in the cannonball's flight when
it has its "initial velocity". The cannonball is clearly moving inside the barrel of the cannon, but at
which point in the cannonball's path do we mark the initial velocity? The cannonball is packed
onto a mass of gunpowder in the base of the cannon. When the powder is ignited, the chemical
reaction
produces gas and a large amount of heat which causes the gas to expand rapidly.
Qualitatively, describe what is happening to the motion of the cannonball from the moment the
powder is ignited until the moment when we say it is traveling with its "initial velocity"? Where is
the cannonball when we say it has its initial velocity?
