Question

(a) How would you account for the following:

(i) Actinoid contraction is greater than lanthanoid contraction.

(ii) Transition metals form coloured compounds.

Expert Solution
Step 1

i) The actinides have 5f orbitals whereas lanthanides have 4f orbitals filled.

The 5f orbitals have a poor shielding effect than 4f orbitals. Due to which 5f orbitals experience more nuclear charge than 4f orbitals which causes the size contraction in 5f orbitals and 4f orbitals. Hence, actinides experience greater effective nuclear charge than lanthanides,

The size contraction is greater in actinides than in lanthanides.

Therefore, actinide contraction is greater than lanthanide contraction.
