Sir William Howard Russell (1820–1907)
Russell, William Howard, Sir. An English journalist; born at Lilyvale near Dublin, March 28, 1820; died in 1907. He was special correspondent of the London Times in the Crimea (1854–55); in India during the Sepoy Mutiny (1857–59); in the United States during the Civil War, and known as “Bull Run Russell”; and its war correspondent in the Franco-German War of 1870. He published: ‘Extraordinary Men’ (1853); ‘The Crimean War’ (1855–56); ‘My Diary in India’; ‘My Diary during the Last Great War’ (1873); ‘The Prince of Wales’s Tour’ (1877); ‘Hesperothen’ (1882); and others. He was knighted in 1895, in recognition of his services to journalism.
