Jean-François Regnard (1655–1709)
Regnard, Jean François (ren-yär’). A French comic dramatist; born at Paris in 1656; died on Sept. 4, 1709. By common consent his rank in France is second to Molière only. His finest productions are: ‘The Gambler’ (1696), and ‘The Sole Legatee’ (1708). He also wrote: ‘The Absent-Minded’ (1697); ‘The Unexpected Return’ (1700); ‘The Follies of Love’ (1704); ‘The Menæchmi’ (1705), in imitation of Plautus; and a number of satires and poems.
