Homer (fl. 850 B.C.)

Homer (hō’mėr). The greatest of epic poets, author of the Iliad and Odyssey. The date of his birth is generally set at the eighth or ninth century B.C., but has been the subject of discussion among scholars, with various results. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
