The Emperor Hadrian (76–138): To his Soul

By Roman Poets of the Later Empire

Translation of William Everett

LIFELING, changeling, darling,

My body’s comrade and guest,—

To what place now wilt betake thee,

Weakling, shivering, starveling,

Nor utter thy wonted jest?

Translation of L. P. D.

LITTLE soul from far away,

Sweet and gay,

While the body’s friend and guest,—

Whither now again wilt stray?

Shivering, paling,

Rent thy veiling,

And forgot thy wonted jest?
