A College Curriculum in Literature: Belgian and Dutch Literature

By Gerhard Richard Lomer (1882–1970)

64. Introduction to Dutch Literature

Most people would go through life ignorant of the masterpieces of Dutch literature were these not conveniently placed before them in translation. This course introduces the student to the literature of a country which, though small in size, has loomed large in the course of European history.

Reading:Erasmus; Cats; Hooft; Spinoza; Bilderdijk; Dekker.

65. Introduction to Belgian Literature

The name and work of Maeterlinck are known to all modern readers. In this course the student is introduced to a systematic study of this great modern Belgian and his fellow-writers. The political prominence which the war has thrust upon Belgium makes an acquaintance with the literature of that country a necessary part of the intellectual equipment of every educated person.

Reading:Conscience; Eekhoud; Verhaeren; Maeterlinck.
