Gender Inequalities in Soccer
When it comes to sports men and women are rarely given equal opportunities to excel. This is the case in soccer specifically, as many individuals over look women’s soccer. Women are having to play on turf fields which is causing more injuries compared to men playing on natural grass. Men also make more money per match and they receive money if they lose, whereas the women do not receive any money if they lose a match. While women are becoming more successful, the men’s team has been around longer and bring in more media coverage and endorsements for the league. Despite the discrepancies found in media coverage of both teams, the US soccer federation and Federation International Football Association should provide equal opportunities for both men’s and women’s soccer teams.
Twenty years ago the United States started their first men’s soccer league. The Major League Soccer (MLS) started out in 1996 with 10 teams and has continued to grow the sport of soccer and the league currently has 20 teams. On the other hand, women’s soccer started a league after the U.S. women’s national team won the World Cup in 1996, but they failed to bring in revenue for the federation. The women are now on their third league and are starting to bring in the same sales as the men. Currently, when it comes to the national teams, the women are bringing in money for the federation while the men are losing the federation money, because they are not winning as many games as
Comparing the U.S. women's national team(USWNT) to the U.S. men's national team (USMNT) seems pretty easy. They play the same game but against different genders. One thing people do not realize is how large the pay gap is. Even though they are playing the same game, the USWNT players receives $3650 less than the USMNT earns for a loss. These numbers never balance out, and they should. Women's soccer is gaining popularity, and the USWNT does a better job at representing US soccer in terms of tournaments and wins. Although they play the same game for the same team, there is little equality between the USWNT and the USMNT.
In the United states females make about seventy seven cents for every dollar a male makes. This is a huge difference and is unequal if both sexes are getting paid for doing similar jobs. Even though this seems like a huge difference in wages, the difference in wage is a huge difference in professional sports. Many would argue that female athletes should get paid the same as male athletes, but there are also many that would argue the opposite. Gender equality laws call for this, but the fact that female athletes do not provide the same profit as male athletes is not noted when it comes to these laws. Next, both males and females spend the same amount of training when it comes to strengthening their teams, but at the same time male athletes do
The German men’s national soccer team played seven full 90 minute games also. Professional women soccer players separately play on club teams during the year just like the men soccer players. The same set of rules apply to both sexes. But, the one major difference is money. The USWNT should get paid more. If the teams were coed would the prize money change? The USWNT earned the same title as Germany’s men's team but did not earn the same amount of money. The USWNT should get paid more. If the same game is played at the same level of competition, why would the sex of the players change the prize for winning? The USWNT played the same game at the same level of competition as Germany’s men's team but did not earn the same amount of money. The USWNT should get paid more. If men suddenly started to play girl’s lacrosse and adapt to their rules, would they be treated fairly, justly, and without bias? Or would they be treated as unreasonably as the USWNT and female athletes all around the world? The USWNT is the female version of Germany’s men's team but is not treated fairly, justly, or without bias. The USWNT should get paid more. The salary of an athlete should not be based off of the athlete’s gender. The USWNT should get paid
The U.S. women’s soccer team filed a complaint against U.S. Soccer for wage discrimination, claiming they make roughly 40% of what their male counterparts do. This is only the beginning of a trend in wage disparity in the Major Soccer League. The National Women’s Soccer League, or NWSL, has a pay ceiling per player of just $37,800. The men in Major League Soccer make an average of more than $300,000 with a median of about $100,000. The teams in the NWSL have a salary cap of $265,000, but for the men it is more than $3 million. The extremity of the wage gap is clearly depicted in CNN Money, the report states that the “amounts female American players receiving equate to less than 6 cents for every $1 earned by the German men”. The US women’s
For a long time women getting treated equally has been a problem, right now men soccer players have been getting paid more than female players. Female players getting different wages than men is “discrimination” according to the article, “Top Female Players Accuse U.S. Soccer of Wage Discrimination”. Although men soccer players have a bigger audience, women bring more income, they exhibit a better skillset, and the statistically obtain more wins.
The problem is, their pay is totally unfair” (Ferro 1). Competitive levels are still equal between male and female players, they play the same games and the same tournaments, and win and lose about the same between the seasons (in exception to the women’s soccer team). I mean success is what really makes a team attractive and the viewers are more likely to watch which brings in more views and more money. “It shows that while financial inequality among the clubs has increased, competitive balance has remained relatively stable and match attendance appears unrelated to competitive balance” (Szymanski 1). The pay balance will need to take some work and fight to actually balance and make difference in equality in male and female sports. It isn’t even just confined to professional sports, any job profession in general women tend to be paid less, no matter what. Drawing an example right here, take Usain St Leo Bolt, OJ, CD is a Jamaican sprinter. Regarded as the fastest human ever timed, he is the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records since fully automatic time became mandatory. Asafa Powell, CD is a Jamaican sprinter who specialises in the 100 metres. He held the 100 metres world record between June 2005 and May 2008, with times of 9.77 and 9.74
The Women’s U.S. Soccer Team made less than the Men’s U.S. Soccer Team but no one knows why because the women’s team is doing better than the men’s. In 2016, the Women’s U.S. Team filed a complaint to the U.S. Soccer for wage discrimination. They alleged that
The statistics in the article Pay Disparity in U.S. Soccer? It's Complicated show that in 2016 the women's team made a profit of 4.6 million dollars more than the men's team. In 2017 they are projected to profit 5.2 million dollars compared to the men's team which will lose a million dollars (Das). That means that even though they will be bringing in 6.2 million dollars more the article Women Earn The Glory While Men Earn The Money In U.S. Soccer says they still will be paid 5 times less due to their gender (O'Donnell). “There’s two different pay structures. The men get paid per game. Whether they win or lose, they get paid. The women were on a salary-based contract.”- Hope Solo The men's team should not be getting paid even the same amount as the women's team let alone
Little do soccer fans realize women get paid $15.00 less than men a day and only earn a little over $3,500 per game, while men earn over 5,000 per game. Wouldn't you think the team that wins more games, sells more tickets, and has more viewers on tv would be the team that does better, in addition to getting paid more? Women trail behind men in terms of earnings, and they find pay equality has become more and more of a problem in the world of soccer over the decades. Professional women soccer players should get paid as much as the opposite gender.
There is no denying that the U.S. women’s soccer team was discriminated. From our secondary research, it was noted that the pay disparity between women players and men players is unjustified (Futterman, 2016). We observed that the U.S. Women’s National Team has achieved a lot in comparison to their male counterparts in international tournaments in the recent past (Das, 2016). In addition, the women’s soccer team draws in a greater following than the U.S. Men’s National Team. Subsequently, there is no justification for the inequality salary to the U.S. women soccer players. We found it intriguing that despite the fact that they bring a lot of revenue to the country, it still occurred. Cases like this have been common across the world, and the
You have to fight for it.” To get the equal pay that they U.S women’s National Team and women around the world want, they need to fight. When someone wants something and the person they tell says no to them, they find another way around it. They don’t stop wanting it because someone said no. They keep on fighting for what they want. “Players became accepting of making a decent salary. And when I say decent, I mean it’s a good living here in America, but it in no way compares to our counterparts on the men’s team.” The men have a great life, so do the women, but the pay difference between the men and the women does affect them. In no way, shape, or form do the women have less of drive to work hard and play hard in soccer, especially on the U.S National Teams. Yet, there is a pay difference that affects the
It has been pointed out that females are at higher risk in tearing their ACL than males using an epidemiological approach Beck et al., (2017) insurance billing data of patients six to eighteen years of age. The data indicated that over the past 20 years, there has seen an annual increase of 2.3% of ACL injuries for both males and females up to the age of sixteen (Beck et al., 2017). However, Beck et al., (2017) proposed females had a higher injury rate than males.
There are a couple potential solutions to solving the issue of women’s and men’s professional soccer players not receiving equal pay. One solution to achieve equal pay for women’s and men’s professional soccer players is FIFA to fundamentally change (Johnson, 2015). FIFA is composed enough to make serious investments in women’s soccer. However, they just choose not to (Johnson, 2015). FIFA wants women to wait until the year 2107 for potential equal pay (Johnson, 2015). The reason given for women’s soccer players having to wait until 2107 for equal pay was that there has been 30 men’s tournaments and only 7 women’s tournaments (Johnson, 2015). Right now, officials disregard the women’s game, claiming that it isn’t worth investing in, while
All the sportsmen have the common aim between them which is to get a victory for themselves or for the team. Like, athletes playing soccer drag same kind of goal as the athletes playing football, which is to score most points and get a victory for the team. In soccer, there are two nets in each opposite sides of the field where each opposition team can score points by putting ball into the net. Football also share same theory of scoring points by bringing the ball into the opposition’s goal line. These both sports are inter-related between each other. Both the sports play their eleven players on the field at a time with their defense and offense affecting each side of the game. Although, both sports have some similarities between each other but, they differ in rules, concept and
In Laura Santhanam’s article she supports this claim, such as “the women earned less than the men while performing demonstrably better” (Santhanam, 2016). The United States women’s soccer team have won three world cups, but the men haven’t even went past the quarterfinals (Santhanam, 2016). Women’s sports need to have more media coverage to break the stereotype “that women can play sports” and to prove to World that women’s spots matter.
