Why I Want To Become A Children's Nurse

The main reason why I knew Pediatric Registered Nursing was for me was through the many years of working with kids, as well as my personal interests and skills. Since I worked with kids, I gained a lot of patience and understanding, I always had a place in my heart for kids. It’s more than providing medical care, but supporting the patient and family. For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse. I knew that I wanted to be a nurse I was just not sure of what kind of nurse, but as I got older I grew to love babies and kids more and more. It then hit me, that I wanted to be a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse (NICU). Being born prematurely, and knowing by hearing stories and reading about the NICU has shaped me even more to want to be a NICU nurse. Throughout my four years of college, I wanted to learn about myself and the world. I did not want to follow a particular path or be strict with myself. Now, as a graduate I discovered my passion for health and helping people. I want to volunteer at New York Methodist Hospital because I want to learn more about health while getting to help people feel at peace during a difficult time in their life. I am ready to learn and I am ready for a new experience. I want to learn from accomplished individuals and further my knowledge in health for when I decide to go to nursing school. Pediatric nursing is an important profession to us today. They devote their knowledge and skills to caring for children from infancy through the late teen years. Pediatric nursing does not just give you the opportunity to work with children, but with their families as well. I was inspired to become a pediatric nurse when I was younger. I remember when my little sister had to go to Kids First Pediatric to get a flu shot, my sister was so terrified of the needle she began to cry and try to move away from the nurse. In order for the nurse to calm my sister down she started making my sister laugh by playing peek-a-boo with her so that my sister could get her mind off of the needle. Once my sister was no longer thinking about the needle the nurse told my sister to count with her and on the count of three the nurse gave my sister the flu shot without my sister even noticing it. I found it so unique how a nurse could be playful with kids when they’re scared. I like working with kids so I know that this particular field is perfect for me.

Batson Children’s Hospital. It has been an amazing experience! My passion for the medical field and career of nursing has been magnified. I know without a doubt that nursing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I long for the opportunity to care for my future patients and their families. I want to touch other people’s lives just as I have witnessed nurses do throughout my time volunteering. God has given me a passion for nursing. With my passion and compassion for others, I know I will be successful if admitted into the BSN program.

From ages five to eight I remember pretending to be a school teacher. I had imaginary students and gave them grades for the homework I pretended to give them. I despised actual school though. I hated it because I wasn't the smartest student, I couldn't read very well, and I struggled in making friends. I have always had an interest in the idea of teaching, but since I loathed school, I thought it would be an extremely bad idea for me to choose teaching as my career. I then decided, at the age of 11, I wanted to be a Neonatal Nurse. I wanted to be a part of a baby's full recovery of health after birth. I knew a child from my church that was in the NICU for three months after her birth due to Short Bowel Syndrome, so from then on I wanted to

People have always said that I am good with kids. I especially love babies, babies have been something that I have always loved, cared for, and want eventually. I want to keep taking care of them and helping them be healthy. I love science and I do pretty well in it. I have taken mostly honor science classes. I am really good with people and I have seen what it's taken to be nurse and how much work is put into becoming one. My cousin is actually graduating from nursing school this year in May and she inspired me that it was a great career choice to pursue.

Since my work experience in an educational environment I have developed a passion for working with children. From working as a teaching assistant in an additional needs school I have been able to work closely with various students, some of which having profound and multiple learning difficulties, I have been fortunate enough to see the work of nurses and medical professionals who care for these children. This has inspired me to pursue a future in the nursing sector. Thanks to my work I have been able to see the small and big developments that each child is able to make.

As I grow each day and learn more about how much help I can give to a child I become more inspire and motivated to becoming a pediatric nurse, I am starting to realize that my love and care for children is increasing rapidly every day. I do not like seeing a child suffering in pain and knowing one day I can and will be able to help and be a part of something great makes me want to keep going and doing what I love which is helping children. I have also come to the realization that being a pediatric nurse is not for everyone, but I believe I can success and if it’s what I’m devoted to I can do it. I am eager to pursue a career in which is challenging but rewarding, becoming a paediatric nurse would allow me to fulfil this aspiration. Nursing is a career for those who are reliable, empathetic, patient and know how to develop a connection with a patient emotionally as well as their family through difficult times. I have these skills and I truly want to make a difference in a patient's life. In the NHS, the role of a nurse is changing every day, as nurses are getting opportunities to become more involved in the responsibility of patients well-being and health and to become more specialised in different areas such as chemotherapy, surgery, clinical and much more. In studying for a degree in paediatric nursing I am inspired to make most of these opportunities to further my career.

Being a professional is very important to me and I strive for the knowledge to make me into a not so much better nurse but a more qualified nurse. I feel it is important to continue my education even higher after completion of this course. I want my kids to see how important education is. My kids are my biggest influence in my choices I want to be the best I can be for them.

Whenever a child is hurt or upset, no matter where I am, my gut instinct is to sprint over and help in any way possible. Oftentimes this is not needed and I have to carry on wondering what pain or discomfort the child was going through. This is why I want to become a nurse. I want to act on my gut instinct. In fact, there are several reasons why I chose nursing as my profession. First and foremost is that I want to focus on changing people’s lives (Nurse Journal, 2016). As a nurse, I would study the life's value when I would be seeing individuals struggling to remain alive. Since I am fully aware that each life's breadth is a gift, I would, therefore, understand this lesson further as I would be nursing various patients daily. I greatly respect human life, I possess strong values and I am compassionate for empathy and suffering, factors that have further attracted me to the nursing profession. Second, nursing profession allows continuous learning. As I like learning, I would possess unlimited opportunities for advancing my medical knowledge. As such, I would capable of choosing to work in various departments, train to become a medical assistant and as well enter the nursing management where I would grow and mentor new nurses through sharing my knowledge

Although I have experience working with children in a health-related environment I am still relatively new to the role of a nurse and would require more practice and learning regarding paediatric nursing. I hope that the knowledge and skills that I have now, aid in my growth and development as I transfer them from other areas of my life into my work experiences.
