White is colour at its most complete and pure, the colour of perfection. The colour meaning of white is purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. The colour white was introduced into the novel when Daisy was described as wearing a white dress. The dress showed her as having a pure and innocent personality. It was actually ironic that she wore white because the reader knows of her true characteristics, even though she was represented as lovable character in the book and as well as the movie. The white covered the fact that she was having an affair with Gatsby. White can also sometimes symbolize honesty, which is something Nick looked for in people. Gatsby surprised her by making an appearance shortly after she arrived. The nervous Jay Gatsby knocked over and broke a clock while trying to keep his cool around Daisy. This symbolized how time stopped for the two of them when Gatsby went to war. Gatsby wished things could go back to how they were before Daisy married Tom, but inside he knew that it was impossible then. The clock breaking could also be seen as the end of Gatsby's time. It foreshadowed that his time was running short and soon something might happen to prevent him from marrying Daisy. In the end, Wilson cut Gatsby's time short by killing him, for basically no reason as he didn’t even kill Myrtle. Overall, the clock represented time and how it played a reoccurring roll in the novel. Time separated Daisy and Gatsby from getting married five years prior to the setting of the story. The breaking of the clock showed a sudden change in the steady pace of time. White is not only mentioned related to Gatsby, but as Nick went to see Daisy for the first time, over at Tom Buchanan house, Tom said that he is concerned about a book he recently read called ‘The Rise of the Coloured
