White In The Great Gatsby

While Gatsby attempts to hide his dishonesty, Nick, considers himself “one of the few honest people that I have ever known” (Fitzgerald, 59) and Fitzgerald often describes him as wearing white. The first time he attends one of Gatsby's infamous parties, he wears a white flannel suit. Nick is aware of the importance of this event, being formally invited to one of Gatsby's parties, and wants to project the right image. His white suit emulates honesty and the appearance of being untainted.

Throughout the book The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, many colors are used to symbolize characteristics and attitudes. Throughout the book,Tom Buchanan is most often associated with the color red. Red is very fitting to Tom seeing how he resembles many of the cultural connotations of this color. Today red can represent intensity, aggression, and even confidence. Tom has many attributes that suit the color red and the many different connotations that come with the hue.

Throughout The Great Gatsby, there are few people of the non-white race mentioned. This is seen when Nick says, “As we crossed Blackwell's Island a limousine passed us, driven by a white chauffeur, in which sat three modish negroes, two bucks and a girl.” (Fitzgerald 69). Also, Nick says “A pale, well-dressed Negro stepped near.” (Fitzgerald 139) during the aftermath of Myrtle’s death. These are the only times that someone’s race is explicitly described as non-white. Throughout the book, Fitzgerald does not specify the race of all of the characters. Most of the people portrayed in The Great Gatsby are upper class. This idea is representative of the society of the 1920s because most of the upper class people at that time were white. A very important motif in this passage is the color white. Nick states white in two different meanings, at the beginning of the passage ?white? is used to reflect elegance and purity but as Nick spends more time the ?white? in the house he learns that the color symbolizes the stereotypical façade that every character is hiding behind, a dull, vacuous, and bland guise. Fitzgerald uses white to express the many personalities, such as those of Daisy and Jordan. Interestingly, the white appearance would imply purity and innocence, which are, unfortunately, words that can not be remotely associated with either one. From nearly all the colors on the rainbow to the color grey, there is a connection between these buried meanings behind all of the colors. Green is the most important color throughout the book because of special meanings and roles it plays on all of the characters. The color green relates to wealth and success on almost all of the characters. Gatsby is the one who brings this color to life and connects with it to show how it takes part in this story.

James Gatsby is constantly trying to change time. In the book the word time is mentioned hundreds of time showing its definite importance. James Gatsby continued to dwell on the past with his relationship with Daisy which blatantly ruined and future chance she had with him. Gatsby felt as if something was missing from his life and F. Scott Fitzgerald makes the reader conclude that the “thing” is in fact Daisy. He wanted her so much that he wanted to erase the last five years that he didn't spend with her. Assumptions could be made that Gatsby's whole reason in living the life he did was to for lack of a better word impress Daisy. His whole purpose for living was to be with Daisy and that didn't work out his whole life was a waste. He died for the thing he was living for. Gatsby is a pathological control freak, and the one thing he couldn't control with his money, alcohol, a manipulation was time. A clock is a symbol for consistency and and control because it never changes, 12 hours, 60 minutes, 60 seconds, it never changes. So when the clock in the scene with Daisy, Nick, and Gatsby falls and breaks Gatsby begins to feel uncertain about what he is doing and believes that everything was a mistake. Everybody seems to have an obsession with time. People are always looking for a way to travel in time, or change what happened previously in time. Jay Gatsby, in F.
