The thematic statement, “Ambition may lead to negative outcomes” is very true and unfortunately has applied to me. In the summer of 2010, I found myself to be very ambitious and I wanted to learn how to swim, so i asked my grandma to sign me up for swimming lessons. I was very excited, but I was also very nervous. When she finally agreed to sign me up, i was was bursting with excitement. The anticipation was growing and my swimming class were only a week or so away, and I was extremely excited.

Everyone has flaws. Someone may get a little too angry and saw something they do not mean. Maybe someone's pride stops them from asking for help when they need it. Either way, no one is perfect; hubris always finds a way to ruin peoples lives. Sophocles’s two plays Oedipus the King, and Antigone are prime examples of how hubris can lead to ones ultimate downfall, which can be seen through the characters Antigone, Oedipus, and Creon.

Too much ambition can be disastrous. The word “ambition”generally has a positive connotation, however, it is not always a positive thing Too much of a “good thing”, in this case ambition, can be catastrophic. Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, and Tim Burton’s film, The Nightmare before Christmas, use characters, conflict, and plot events to convey the universal theme that too much ambition can alter one’s judgement of right and wrong, causing them them to becomes treacherous or deceitful to achieve their goals.

“Pride”, although it can be a good characteristic, it can also blind you from reality and end up being your biggest downfall. Two examples of pride leading to their downfalls are Josef Stalin and King Creon from the novel Antigone. They are both tragic heroes because they make poor decisions which lead them to becoming bad people. Creon and Stalin both let their pride get the best of them, ultimately ending with the deaths of those close to them, whether its friends, family, or millions of your own citizens.

All humans are united in their imperfection. Everyone is inevitably flawed; this is human nature. How one rectifies their mistakes truly shapes who they are. Shakespeare’s Othello exemplifies the imperfection of human nature, focusing on what happens when each character’s fatal flaw takes control over their decisions, and eventually distorts their individual perspectives. Both the Shakespearean and Greek heroes have a tragic or fatal flaw. Tragic or fatal flaws are flaws that lead to the hero's downfall often being caused by their judgement, pride, or lack of being self aware. The Greek hero Oedipus’s tragic flaw is his lack of control over his temper. Although he had a reason to defend himself he still let his anger get the best of him. Because of Oedipus’s anger he was led to carry out the fate he had tried to avoid. When it comes to Hamlet's flaw it is described as a fatal flaw because his story ended in his death. Hamlet's flaw is his inability to avenge the demise of his father. His hesitance to take revenge for his father is a clear sign of his indecisiveness. Because he couldn't chose to get revenge for the old king he led not only himself but many of the other characters to their deaths. These flaws both lead to the short climax and the end of the stories.

A common fault of people is the idea that we are better than someone else. Whether this be in sports, school, work, or social activities. When someone or something makes us realize that we are not perfect, we learn that we are not better than anyone else because all have faults. Everyone is flawed, but a man who cannot realize his own mistakes leads his person to a never growing and a never-ending cycle of wrongdoing. In the eponymous play, Hamlet by William Shakespeare the tragic hero's cowardice and incapability to act causes not only his downfall but also affects the people around him. Trough out the play the prince does not take any actions, even at the end he does not do anything. Hamlet is haunted by an apparition that demands of him to take revenge on its killer, but the Prince is incapable of killing his uncle and delays his revenge. Furthermore, he ends up dying due to his failure to act moderately. Hamlet's tragic flaw gets in the way of the people that surround him and leads him to never act.

And, while a positive attitude is absolutely crucial, when ambition goes so far as to become an obsession, it becomes harmful. In the case of Willy and countless others, an ambitious attitude is just the first step to a long process in which success becomes more of a necessity than a desire. According to Psychology Today, ambition is pervasive and persistent, and is simply the more public face of greed. In fact, several eastern cultures see ambition as the face of evil, striving to deprive man of connection to one another (Burton). Ambition itself is easily corruptible, and often turns into obsession. Rather than excuse the unhealthy mindsets, goals can be met in a way that fulfills desires without reinforcing negative behaviors. In the end, ambition is what led Willy into his obsession with success, and is overall harmful.

Ambition is a very important thing to have if one wants to be successful. Some people view ambition as evil because it can cause a person to strive for corrupt positions, as Julius Caesar did. For others, ambition is necessary to gain fame, glory, and status in life, as the famous rappers Wale, Meek Mill, and Big Sean have explained in their hit song “Ambition.” I believe that ambition is a driving force in life. Ambition has two polar connotations: ambition can push one to strive for their own personal gain and hoarding of wealth, or to seek fame, glory, and honor.

Choices that people make can be seen in an evil or good nature way just like every day people even Shakespeare knew this and wanted to add this theme to his plays. In Shakespeare play The Tardy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, Othello was our hero. Every hero has flaws that lead to their undoing. Othello’s poor decisions making was caused by his flaws. His tragic flaws are that he makes poor judgment, irrational decisions, and he insecurity. These reasons are his downfall.
