What Is Professionalism In The Workplace

Webster’s describes professionalism as “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.” I can see why people would say that about professionalism. However, I personally don’t fully understand the true meaning of professionalism. That might be because professionalism wasn’t an important part in my life. But now that I’m beginning to grow and learn more about my career and my future, professionalism is something that I’m going to have to work on in order to gain the skills to be respected in the business world.

In both of these places, one comes in expected behave with the right kind of attitude. The only main difference between the two places would be the knowledge one brings. In a workplace, one has all this experience from the previous jobs and education they have. They use that to their advantage and already have a sense of direction in what they’ll be doing with their work. On the other hand, in classroom environment, one is there to learn and gain new skills. You go in ready to gain new knowledge in the subject you’re learning about. In both of these places, one is expected to have the same mindset of being ready and prepared for the work they’re about to get, but have to keep in mind that one place is where you’re using the skills you acquired from past experience and the other place is where you’re coming to learning those skills for your future work …show more content…

Like previously stated, I work as an intern at an accounting firm downtown along with other professionals. Some of the attributes that describe the way I want to be perceived in a workplace would be specialized knowledge, competency, honesty and integrity, respect, accountability, self-regulation, and image. I have gained some of these skills since I started working at the firm, but obviously it’s still a work in progress, since I’ve only been working in a professional environment for the past year. For example, one of the ways I’m perceived at work would be my image. My change in style has dramatically changed since I started the internship. In the past, you would most likely see me wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and some sneakers. But now that I’m surrounded with professionals, I’ve started wearing more business casual clothing items, such as slacks, blouses/blazers, and flats. I’m always trying to find a way in trying to improve the way I look since people almost always get a first impression from you based on your clothing attire. There has been times in the past, in the beginning of my internship, where I had to get tips from the other interns on what was appropriate and what wasn’t appropriate to wear in the office.
