The first way this class will help me in the future is by preparing me to develop great organizational skills. The five paragraph format has not changed for writing an essay. For instance, if I am trying to convince the mayor to change something in my city, I can provide him with an essay with strong evidence and supporting details. This course was comprised of many learning activities; each was designed to help me achieve the course learning outcomes. I have taken two college English classes in the past; however, it has been several years since my last college class. I have some experience in writing and this class definitely helped me get back into writing. I often have trouble brainstorming and capturing the subject I need to write about. This class definitely helped me overcome the challenges I faced in writing and being able to effectively express my ideas in a clear and concise manner. Not to mention, it definitely helped build my writing foundation through a step by step approach to each assignment. Therefore, this class bolstered my writing and communication skills.
Harriet Tubman once said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world” (brainyquote.com). This quote is always inspiring to me, since I can see my own life experience through it. Studying in the United States has been my dream since I was young. During the first semester of my freshman year, UCWR110, the university writing class, makes me feel the essence of the quote. Thanks to UCWR110, I have improved my reading strength, my patience in reading in English as a second language, as well as my passion in writing in English. I realize that writing plays an important role in my everyday study and it is a key to my dream.
In addition, the writing experience at the end of the course will help you with persuasive speaking in front of an audience. To get you started, the activities and assignments will ease you into thinking about the argument, and help you consider what direction your paper might take. This knowledge will give you reasons to persuade your audience and to support your argument. In summation, you will know how to define your topic, thesis/claim, and purpose of your
Before taking this class I never liked my English classes more specifically writing essays for them. I didn’t understand much of how to use strategies while writing essays and focuses little on learning it. By taking this class and using the strategies that I was provided with it made taking this class easy and enjoyable while writing analytical essays. I was willing to put in the effort and do my part in order to get a good grade in this English class and it worked. I feel that my performance in an English class has improved significantly.
During this semester, I have learned multiple things in my class, English 101. I have learned a lot about different concepts while writing these essays, I am less scared of the blank white page, and improved my rhetorical strategies. Through class assignments and writing the different types of papers, I learned these skills. Writing the Response to Argument essay and the Comparing Perspectives essay, was the most challenging to write, but improved my writing skills significantly.
Though I have spent many years learning English, it is an ongoing process that requires a lot of hard work. I was very glad to find out that the first four weeks of the course would be focused on grammatical rules and sentence patterns. Because I never focused on the structure of my sentences, I believe I wrote dull and flat texts. Moreover, my punctuation was terrible since I had no understanding of English punctuation. But the lessons on the sentence structure turned my world upside down: It was hard to believe that even simple sentences have such a great variety and can turn your paper into something very interesting in the terms of structure. Practicing skill of building effective sentences in the same essay was very helpful, for it allowed to focus purely on the sentence and structure patterns rather than on the context. My writing improved since the beginning of the semester and I became a more confident
Writing is an important form of communication. It is a personal process that portrays your thoughts and views to someone else. It is not only an important skill to have for school work and certain professions, but daily messages such as emails, texts, and tweets as well. It can have a big impact on how you come across to certain people. Because of this, it is very important for me to practice writing. I believe that this course has improved my writing, which will help me in many ways in the future.
When I first decided to take the class I didn't expect much from it, except for writing tons of essays each week. My expectations were not high because I knew it was another core class I had to get through. However, my expectations were completely overturned after taking this class for a semester. Instead of writing essays each week we had free writing, a walking journal, interesting articles to read, and most importantly lots of interaction with our peers. This class was nothing what I expected and I was really surprised how it turned out to be one of my favorite classes I have taken so far. I have learned so much about improving my writing and grammar, authors, techniques in writing, and even how to cope with stress and organize my thoughts back in order. I learned all about polemic and dialectic writing as
In the article “Unteaching the five-paragraph Essay”, Foley Marie, disputes that the five-paragraph formula does not allow students to think in a critical way and prevents them from discovering new information. According to Foley “the prefabricated structure invites students to fill the five sots with what they already know, thus often depriving them of the pleasure of discovering new ideas”. The reason why the five-paragraph formula continues to be taught to students because its easier for teachers to teach it the class rather then teaching individually. Although students feel nervous when writing, they hardly create something theirs. The author believes the formula its useful for beginner students writers “it helps them to overcome writers
This class has helped me to improve my writing in many ways. Though I do not manage my time as well as I would like to at the moment, I have evolved this aspect of my writing vastly. At the beginning of the semester, it took anywhere between two and four hours to complete an essay, and I would wait until the very last minute to even begin writing. I have learned how to properly manage my time in order to write my essays in a shorter amount of time. I have also increased my ability to find and present sources in an academic essay. Though I still need to polish my ability to present information without bias, I am able to find relevant information in order to further prove my point in an essay. Overall, this class has taught me many valuable things
Throughout the course I have become aware of the numerous weaknesses and strengths that I possess. And a major weakness that I observe in my skills which can be detrimental to my writing is that I lack the ability to organize my essays properly. When I write essays I tend to do so without the aid of an outline, however, after this course I was able to understand that an outline is important for me to use. An outline allows me to pace myself while I write, so that I will be able to properly organize any essays.
In my second attempt at English class I realized after the first couple classes that writing was no longer some magical formula you could follow and if you did you would pass. “For some it will come as a surprise to learn that reading and writing have no transformative powers.”
Throughout my high school English class career, I have learned an array of concepts. Beginning with freshman year, I reviewed the basic concepts of writing and how to respond to literature. Then, in sophomore year I discovered how to write in a formal, educated manner. So far in junior year, I have learned different approaches to analyzing literary works. The key topics I have learned in high school English classes are the steps to writing and polishing a paper, how to write formally and common style and grammar mistakes.
I never knew how essential reading and writing was until this class. Yes, we all hear how good reading is for you and how important it is but, I never really understood why. I have learned a lot during my time in this course. From not only concrete material but about myself as well. The most important things that stick out in my brain though when I’m asked what have I learned is: being confident in my writing, reading and writing is an essential key to life, and that being venerable doesn’t mean weak. Starting with being confident in my writing. Being confident with your writing believe and put your best foot forward when it comes to writing any type of paper or speech. For someone like me who hated writing essay or any type of writing assignment
