Subject: Employee Assistance Program for Mental Health and Wellness
The purpose of this memo is to inform you about an important topic regarding your health and wellness. As part of our Cleveland Clinic Corporate Wellness Program, we are now offering an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a program designed to help employees manage their mental and emotional well-being. Our primary objective is to create awareness around mental health and reduce the stigmas associated to it by creating an environment where leaders talk openly about mental health in public forums. These open forums are designed to build an environment of trust and safety where employees feel comfortable discussing the topic and are able to initiate getting the help they need at the time they need it.
According to the Society for Human Resource Management (2014), more than 41 million workers, (approximately 18 percent of the population) suffer from some type of mental illness,

Providing resources where employees can seek the confidential advice and help from counselors who are experts in their field will aim to reduce turnover, absenteeism and increase productivity. As we prepare to implement this program, a video will be sent to each employee’s email that will share more information around this program, the benefit it provides as well as information on how to access an expert in the network. Effective May 1, 2017, we will be holding kick-off campaigns in the downstairs lobby every Monday afternoon where educational material will be provided around destigmatizing mental illness. The implementation of this EAP is an investment in the overall health and wellness of the organization’s employees, and it is recommended that all employees take advantage of it once it becomes
Conversely, resources can be accessed through the Provincial Health Services Authority, PHSA. PHSA believes that untreated mental illness can hugely impact employee health and works to support health care professionals, like nurses, to overcome emotional challenges (Provincial Health Services Authority [PHSA], 2017). Through their website, nurses suffering from a psychological injury can access resources such as the free and confidential Employee and Family Assistance Program, EFAP. Not only does EFAP provide Monday to Friday counselling services for employees, but the program also offers Critical Incident Stress Management Services, CISM. This provides 24 hour, 7 days a week triage, consultation and coaching for health care workers experiencing a traumatic event (Employee and Family Assistance Program, 2012). This program is a great tool for nurses and should be utilized whenever necessary.
Many people with mental illnesses try to hide their mental illness when applying for a job. Research from Mind released on May 16, 2011 found that one in five people who had disclosed their mental illness had been sacked or forced out of their jobs. This shows how most employers don’t want to hire people with mental illness. People with mental illnesses often intimidate employers because they often believe they could be a liability. But in reality although people have a mental illness there are quite a few jobs they are easily capable of doing and we should encourage their interest in working if they are capable of performing the job correctly. According to Psychology Today there are still attitudes within most societies that view symptoms of psychopathology as threatening and uncomfortable, and these attitudes frequently foster stigma and discrimination toward people with mental health problems. People's views on mental illness have been commonly portrayed through the mainstream media in an unpleasant way. This makes life more difficult for people with mental illnesses because this leads to discrimination by others. We should all erase the portrayal of people with mental illnesses, especially employers. If we are going to make opinions of people especially with mental illnesses then we should first do research on their condition.
Employee benefits could be improved by expanding the employee assistance program to include counseling services to help employees work through various life challenges that may adversely affect job performance, health, and personal well-being to return them to full productivity, thereby optimizing the company’s success.
An Employee Assistance Program, also known as an EAP, is an employer funded counselling service to help employees deal with social and emotional problems that impact on their well-being and on their work.
Mental health counselors are still facing barriers in employment with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Although in December 2010, the VA released the qualification of standards in hiring LPMHs, there is still a shortage of LPMHs (NBCC, ). Today there are about 0.001% or licensed professional counselor working at the VA compared to 25% of all U.S. mental health professional (AAMF, n.d.). In 2015, the Department of Veterans concluded that license mental health counselor would be included in their hiring of 1,900 mental health staff positions (AAMF, n.d.). How can that be so when there is no series code for mental health counselors within the OPM. This is a limitation for mental health counselors when searching for a job within the Department
Consequently, government agencies are working with employers to help reduce the causes of mental health, including the

However, in comparison, the EPA program addresses any issues that hinder the work performance of any employee. EAP is a worksite-focused program designed to assist in the identification and resolution of productivity problems associated with personal problems, such as alcohol and/or drug abuse.(2) If design properly, a wellness programs can best address early alcohol problems if they adopt the “back door” approach by incorporating specific information about alcohol’s negative effects on other health condition (1). An EAP alcohol program addresses the short term and long term use of alcohol treatment. (2) Like EPA, Duke’s PAS Personal Assistant programs consist of guidelines with short and long term goals for the employee. Upon hire the EAP program representative
Firstly, adults with mental illnesses experience discrimination from employers which leads to very high unemployment rates for this marginalized group. ‘‘Sixty-one percent of working age adults with mental health disabilities are outside of the labour force, compared with only 20% of working-age
In addition to short-term counseling and referrals, many EAPs offer additional drug and alcohol related services that benefit employees and the company, such as supervisor training and employee education. Businesses with financial constraints may be able to join a consortium to offer their workers EAP services or, at a minimum, should provide a resource file from which employees can access information about treatment programs and help lines. EAPs also offer an
Wishing you total wellness and vitality. The purpose of this memo is to provide information about my idea for a new company focused on providing supplements for physically active men.
Specific programs that Lynne should launch include an Employee assistance program (EAP), “to help employees cope with physical, mental, or emotional problems (including stress) that are undermining their job performance” (Gomez-Melia et al., 2011, p. 561). In additional, Lynne should look at implementing wellness programs which are “preventive efforts designed to help employees identify potential health risk and deal with them before they become problems” (Gomez-Melia et al., 2011, p. 561). A wellness program will “encourage

As there are many different professions within the health industry, there are many contributions that it makes to the society and community. Through different occupations, such as psychologist, people within the community are able to target specific help for different requirements. This could be for diseases, physical and mental health (1).
As an EAP counselor, it is essential for me to be assured of my ability to protect my clients’ confidentiality. I am aware of lines being blurred when counseling, for instance, a boss and his/her employee. I should be able to assure both parties that the information shared during our sessions will be held to the privacy standards required of counselor and client relationships. Committing to professional behaviors such as maintaining a strictly professional relationship, being an attentive listener, respecting cultural differences, and advocating for my clients. I would also be trained in working with adults, as well as children and couples since EAP services sometimes include the family members. An asset I would like to have is some wellness and prevention training because a focus in EAP counseling is geared towards wellness.
