Was America's Entry Into World War 1 Justified

People have been debating over this topic for a long time. There are two good sides with reasons if the United States should have joined the World War II. In my opinion, the United States should have joined the World War II because the United States was being invaded by the Nazi because they were mad at America. The Nazi were also trying to rule all of Germany and we couldn't let that go and let them win right after they bombed the United States. This is why we should of joined World War II.

Politics executed a part in America entering the war also. Propaganda from both sides determined America’s decision. President Wilson did not want to go to war, but when Teddy Roosevelt wanted to run for anther term, Wilson felt intimidated and declared that there would be a preparation program and a chance that America would go to war. By taking part in the war, America was validating itself as a world power.

The United States government announced a policy of neutrality at the outbreak of the war in Europe because it did not want to risk what was at stake by entering the war. It was also believed that the fighting would be contained in Europe and would have no threat of violence for Americans. Since the imports and exports were so important for Americans they did not want to enter the war and complicate the trade. It was not until the threat to sink all ships did the United States government feel as though they needed to enter the war. It was very important for the United States to get involved to stop Germany from taking over Europe and creating a major threat for Americans.

“Every man who really loves America will act and speak in the true spirit of neutrality”.1 These are the words of President Woodrow Wilson during his “Declaration of Neutrality” on August 19, 1914. Something crazy would happen, the United States would enter The Great War a three years later. A lot of things influenced the United States to finally get to their eventual declaration of war on Germany. The two factors I thought most significant were: the United States’ economic interests favoring Great Britain and Wilson’s insatiable need to have a voice at the peace talks in Europe.

They say that the only thing that caused the United States to enter WW1 was the discovery of the Zimmerman Telegram. The Zimmerman Telegram was discovered February 1917 and the US entered the war on April 6, 1917. They say that was the only cause because it was in the closest timeframe. The Lusitania was two years prior, and the unrestricted submarine warfare was an ongoing 2 year struggle so the telegram was the only one applicable to the events happening during its declaration of war. Also that if Mexico had helped Germany, Germany said it would give them “substantial aid” in other words states it had lost in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. This was a direct threat to the United States’ territory and that territory is the most valuable thing for a nation. The letter was impactful but not that impactful to be the sole factor of the United States’ entry in the United States. If this was the sole thing that happened, it is unlikely that the US would have entered the war. Americans were dying, and that was another things the US kept in mind while entering the war. Between the years of 1894 and 1914, America’s investments overseas have increased five-fold; however, German U-boats and the Great Britain’s naval blockade threaten our foreign interests. Thus, the United States must join the Allies in The Great War and defend our country, her interests and her allies overseas in Europe. In this paper the reader will be introduced to the pros and cons of America joining the fight against the Central Powers, and why it is essential that the country put up a strong fight against the enemy and become involved with the war.

America entered World War I on April 6th, 1917. America was justified in joining the war due to German attacks on U.S. ships or ships that contained U.S. citizens. While there are counter arguments that could be made, I believe America was correct in entering the war.

America had no intention of entering WWI as President Woodrow Wilson had declared their policy of neutrality in 1914 after the continent of Europe had erupted in conflict. President Wilson aimed to deal with all participants in the war in a fair way that did not show signs of allegiance to either side as he tried to help find a way towards peaceful resolution. Happenings in Europe soon changed Wilson’s view of neutrality. Many American lives had been lost at sea after the sinking of the Lusitania and other ships due to Germany’s unrestricted submarine attacks. The United States entered World War I to fight for democracy. Another reason they entered war was because the arguments about capitalism. Part of the reason they entered the war was because of the German submarine warfare. The United States wanted to stay as far away from war as possible. It learned its lesson from World War I. When World War I erupted in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson pledged neutrality for the United States, a position that the clear majority of Americans favored. But can you truly isolate a country from war? With allies, and political ties, can it truly be done? No, it can’t. To prevent an arms race that could lead to another world war, America signed several disarmament treaties to limit the size of naval fleets among Britain, France, Italy, Japan, and the United States. It also wanted to avoid any involvement in European or Asian affairs. Isolationism was America’s way of trying to stay safe.

Another reason the U.S. joined World War II was because the Germans were sinking United States’ ships while taking supplies to England.  The Germans were, also, using unrestricted submarine warfare even after they promised not to two years before that. The German submarines began shooting at United States war ships.  At that point, the Germans declared war on the United States.  Hitler declared war on the United States because he believed that it was an opportunity to be seized.  He thought that it would be easy to knock the United States out of the war and continue on his dominance throughout the world.  “He was convinced that the United States would soon beat him to the punch and declare war on Germany.  The U.S. Navy was already attacking German U-boats, and Hitler didn’t care for Roosevelt because of his repeated verbal attacks against his Nazi ideology” (History.com).  This states that Hitler did not like the United States and wanted to get rid of them and the rest of the Allies and continue to get what he wanted.  It is clear why the United States should have entered the war and kept Germany from being the most dominant country in the world, although some disagree.

The U.S entering World War 1 was justified. The United States didn't decide to get involved until a couple Americans died because the Germans sunk the Lusitania which was carrying about 173 tons of war munitions for Britain and contained American soldiers, 128 died. Second, it was the Zimmermann Telegram, Germany told Mexico to declare war on America which outraged them, and lastly, Germans would sink anything that goes in their way with their submarines. The United States wasn’t jumping to get involved it WWI. They wanted to remain neutral for the duration of the war. However those plans did not last because we entered the war in 1917. There were many reasons the war started in general and that U.S. entered the war. There were many things that resulted from the war.

When war broke out, there was no way the world could possibly know the severity it would have taken on the people of the world. Fortunately one country saw and understood that Germany and its allies would have to be stopped. America’s Involvement in World War II not only contributed in the downfall of the insane Adolph Hitler and his Third Reich, but also came at the best time and moment. If the United States entered the war any earlier the consequences would probably have been worse.
