Ever since I was little I was told that I was going to be a veterinarian. Well not quite I think vet tech is more of my area. I love animals they amaze me, and I love dogs the most. There are two levels of education for entry into this occupation. A 4-year program for veterinary technologist, and a 2-year program for veterinary technician. Both need to pass a credentialing exam to be licensed, certified, or registered depending on the state. Also it is recommended that in highschool you take biology, math, and science classes. Both veterinary technologists and technician typically work in private clinics and hospitals. Sometimes in laboratories, humane societies and universities. There is a higher rate of illnesses than the national rate, this being because workers could could get bitten, scratched, or kicked. This happens because of dealing with aggressive or scared animals. Many clinics are open 24 hours so with that being said some will have to work holidays or weekends. As an intern I am able to do restraint if the animal is friendly. I also assist with blood test, fecal, and heartworm test. I clean rooms as well. I have had the opportunity to observe some surgeries as well. Which was very interesting and gross, but overall very

The work environment in Vet Tech is stressful. In a Vet clinic, illnesses and injuries are more common in Vet Tech. One has to be able to handle being kicked, bitten, scratched, etc when holding, cleaning, or restraining an animal. Try to avoid getting injuries while working in a Vet. Watch for body language in an animal and have proper restraint techniques. To avoid illnesses, the Vet Tech should follow safety procedures. Her job responsibilities are checking animals in for surgeries and or appointments. She also is responsible for prepping animals for surgery and cleaning surgical instruments. Also making sure that the animals are recovering well and alerting the doctor if there are any problems. During appointments she has to question the owners about the pet’s problems or if it is in for vaccines then ask how their year has been or if they have any questions that they want to ask the doctor. Also draws up vaccines and get them ready for the doctor to take them into the room and also dispense medications for the doctor to send home. If an animal in the kennel left a mess then she has to clean it up. What she likes about her job is working with the animals and most of the owners, knowing that she helps them feel better. What she dislikes about her job is getting bit and when the animals have accidents on her.

Working with animals has been a dream of mine since childhood. I was raised next door to the town veterinarian, Dr. Murphy. He specialized in farm animals, which my family raised, so he visited our house on a regular basis. He knew I loved to hear stories about his patients and always entertained me, no matter how busy he was. When I was 10, Dr. Murphy gave me a copy of “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Herriot. The book told the story of a country veterinarian and his daily work. To this day, that book remains one of my favorites and always renews my interest in animals.
