UMUC Haircuts has been doing business since 1995 and has seen a few other shops open in the area. Recently there has been news that a Hair Cuttery, offering men and women haircuts and styles, will be opening about 5 miles away. Also a spa has opened in the shopping center across the street, offering hair styling and manicures. Although UMUC Haircuts continues to grow and profits increase, the owner would like to improve operations in the areas of scheduling, supply ordering, inventory management, collecting customer information and marketing. Customers can be lost to competition. When there are several choices for products and services the threat becomes high and when the choices are limited the threat is low. As mentioned in the introduction there continues to be more and more competition coming to the area, which could cause UMUC Haircuts to lose business to its competitors, which in turn could affect the growth and profit of the business.

4) Threats of New Entrants. New market entrants can steal investment capital. The threat is low when the capital investment is high and high when the investment is low. In this situation, it would be a high investment to open a new shop in this area.

5) Rivalry among Existing Competitors. Under the circumstances customers have several choices for these services making the area very competitive. Students as well as individuals who work in the area will use these services. The focus will be to not only address what UMUC Haircuts is offering (customer service and quality services) but, to stay abreast of what the customers want.
Strategy for Competitive Advantage. The strategy chosen will be Innovation. Resouces will be identified that will add value, improve efficiency and effectiveness for the business. In addition these resources will have to be unique to the business and have appropriability, which means to have the ability to generate earnings from the resource.
