The end of the French and Indian War brought debt to Great Britain. To pay for the costs of the war, British Parliament passed a series of laws taxing the American colonists. The colonies became upset with all of the new taxes and began to rebel. The colonists had no representation in British Parliament and felt that they should not pay for taxes without the ability to have a say. Their rebellions only made the British create more laws without them. In 1765, British Parliament passed the Stamp Act (Document 3) to pay for the French and Indian War. This law taxed the American colonists on things like newspapers, almanacs, and calendars. The colonists became angry about the new taxes because they had no representation in the government or say in their taxes. They believed that it was unfair for Great Britain to tax them without given them the right to a representative in Parliament. As the colonists rebelled, the British …show more content…
The Boston Tea Party was when a group of colonists dressed up as Native Americans and marched onto a ship in the Boston Harbor. The boat contained imported tea from Great Britain. The colonists were still angry that their was a tax on tea so they threw all of it overboard the ship. The British then became mad at the colonists and created more laws to punish them. After the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament passed a series of laws called the Intolerable Acts (Document 5). The Intolerable Acts closed the port of Boston until the colonists could pay for all of the tea they had thrown overboard. They also banned town meetings and had all British officials accused of committing crimes sent to Britain for their trial. The law that annoyed the colonists the most was the Quartering Act. This allowed british troops to stay in the colonists homes. These new laws only made the colonists angrier and more rebellious as they boycotted British
It was the Tea Act. This act stated that only the British East India Company could sell or transport tea. Members of parliament passed this act because many of them had stakes in the company. At the time the British India Company was going bankrupt. This act threatened all colonial businesses by creating a monopoly. In Boston, the colonists devised a plan to resist this act. Several colonists dressed as Indians to deceive the British. These colonists seized the imported tea and dumped it into the harbor. The colonists dubbed this “the tea party.” The British responded to these actions by creating four acts jointly called the Coercive Acts. These acts closed the Boston ports to all trade, increased power of Massachusetts governor, granted trials of royal officials in Massachusetts be tried elsewhere, and allowed the new governor rights to quarter his troops anywhere. These Coercive Acts only angered the colonists more. They have strengthened their non-importation of British goods. They have also begun the forming of local militia companies.
In 1765 the Stamp Act was passed and colonists had various reactions to these acts. The Stamp Act was an act created by the British. This was to pay off the debt they had from the French and Indian War. Items that were taxed were newspapers, dice, legal documents, and playing cards. Basically all printed goods were taxed. Colonists that wrote
Once again, the colonists were angry that they were being taxed on basic needs. This anger only grew through the Boston Massacre incident, where five colonists were killed, and the Boston Tea Party, where enraged colonists dumped tea into the Boston Harbor. The last straw for the colonists seemed to be the passing of the Coercive Acts, otherwise known as the Intolerable Acts. These acts were created to regulate and basically restrict the colonists to make them realize that Parliament was in control. Colonists did not agree with this act, specifically the Quartering Act which required them to house British soldiers, as well as feed and clothe them. These acts and taxations, along with the violent incidents that occurred in Boston, and a lack of colonial representation in the Parliament caused the colonists to
The French and Indian war caused debts among the British. The British realized that during the war the income from the colonies was insufficient (document F). After the war, the British needed certain ways in which to gain revenue. They imposed taxes on the Colonists. These taxes, in turn, caused a stir among Americans. The Stamp Act was a tax imposed on the colonists without representation (document H). Their liberties as English citizens were being denied. Radical Whigs would go as far to say it
The Boston Tea Party was an act of protest by the colonists. They were searching for freedom when they came to the New World. When they dumped the tea, they showed that they no longer wanted to be under British rule. This was a turning point that led our country toward becoming
When the British fought in the French and Indian War it put them in great debt. In order to get out of the enormous debt they taxed the colonies. The reactions of the colonists were sometimes harsh. They argued they had no representation in Parliament so they tarred and feathered, burned effigies, raided tax collectors, and boycotted British goods. Some of the acts they passed were the Sugar and Coercive Acts. They both angered the colonists tremendously. The Acts passed by the British caused tensions and many reactions from the colonists.
The Intolerable Acts brought the disagreement between the colonies and Great Britain from an argument over taxes to a much higher level, in which the entire parliamentary authority was confronted. The colonists were originally upset with the taxes Britain was imposing on them such as the Trade and Navigation Acts, the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act and the Townshend Revenue Act. But as its name suggests, the Intolerable Acts were those that pushed the Americans to their limit. Their impact encouraged all
Halfway through the 18th century The French and Indian War was fought between British America and New France in their attempts to colonize North America. In order to keep British colonists safe, King George III of Britain had to invest large amounts of money in supplies for his military and colonists which would led the British government to extreme debt. In order to recover from his debt, King George began taxing the colonies without consent. The American Revolution was a series of events in the 18th century caused by disagreements between the English Parliament and British citizens in America. Along with taxation without representation, the American revolution was triggered by acts of rebellion and unfair enforcement by the British government.
In 1765 the stamp act was passed by the british because they were in debt from the french and indian war. The british made a tax on all paper products from england. There were many different reactions towards the tax, there were violent acts and some less violent acts. Colonial families in 1765 had multiple ways of reacting towards the stamp act such as violently trying to make the tax collectors resign, boycotting british products, feeling like slaves towards england, and writing documents and petitions to the king.
The Constitution enabled the colonists to be fairly represented in the government, a privilege that the British government denied the colonists. After the French and Indian War in 1754, Britain was left with a massive amount of debt. To raise revenue, Parliament enforced multiple acts on the colonies. Two of these acts were the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. The Sugar Act taxed imported items while the Stamp Act taxed anything that was on paper. Being that the Stamp Act was a direct tax, it infuriated the colonists. The colonists believed
The protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, a bill designed to save the faltering East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax and granting it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade. The British tea dumped in Boston Harbor on the night of December 16 was valued at some $18,000. The Coercive Acts closed Boston to merchant shipping, established formal British military rule in Massachusetts, made British officials immune to criminal prosecution in America, and required colonists to quarter British troops. The colonists subsequently called the first Continental Congress to consider a united American resistance to the British. “The Turning point was the tea act and the resulting Tea Party in Boston in
After the French and Indian War ended in 1763, Britain had a huge debt that had to be paid. Unfortunately, the war had been a long and costly one and had taken it's toll on Britain's finances. In an effort to make up the debt Britain's Parliament began passing laws by placing taxes on goods purchased by the colonists in America. First, there was the Sugar Act in 1764, and then the Stamp Act the following year, as well as a variety of other laws enforced to get money from the colonists. Naturally, the colonists were not pleased with Britain's control and taxation. The colonists felt that they should not be held accountable for the debt and should not have to pay the taxes. The colonists felt that since Parliament was elected by people living in England and they did not take part in voting for members of Parliament then Parliament did not have the right to take their money by imposing taxes.

Following the Boston Massacre, which was initially an act of anger towards Great Britain, the Boston Tea party took place. The Boston Tea party occurred for the same reason as the Boston Massacre. This reason was again, taxation without representation. The colonists were fed up with all of the taxes and acted out. On December 16, 1773, the colonists boarded British ships and dumped all of the tea and other goods into the ocean. This outraged the King of Great Britain. The port that the tea and goods were dumped at out of Boston was shut down by the King until it was cleaned up by the colonists. The King also put complete rule over Massachusetts, and sent troops into the colonies to take them over. These punishments that the King set for the colonists are an example of the Intolerable Acts.
