Although today equality is one of the main aspects of the American government, during the foundation period groups that were not given many freedoms used their rights to fight for greater equality. In 1977, African-American activists signed the Slave Petition for Freedom in an attempt to free slaves and give them freedoms. In America, slaves were treated very badly under the control of white aristocrats. Slaves were put under very strict guidelines and if those instructions were not met, they would be punished. Between 1492-1776, although many people moved to the “New World”, North America lost population due to the amount of Indians dying from war and diseases and the inability of colonists to replace them. John Murrin states, “losers far outnumbered winners” in “ a tragedy of such huge proportions that no one’s imagination can easily encompass it all.” This thought of a decreasing population broadens one’s perspective of history from that of an excluded American tale full of positivity to that of a more unbiased, all-encompassing analysis. The Indians and slaves have recently been noted as a more crucial part of history than previously accredited with.

Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maryland were the thirteen colonies all had a different reason to be a colony.

The history of North America centers around the struggle of England, France, and Spain to gain control of the continent. Settlers and their governments used different approaches on their efforts to colonization. These differences lead to advantages and disadvantages that resulted in the New World’s fate. France and Spain were governed by sovereigns whose rule was absolute. The English colonists were able to govern themselves and had plenty of freedom as long as they followed English law and were loyal to the king. England strengthened immigration from other nations, unlike France and Spain. By 1763, the English have defeated France and Spain in the French and Indian War establishing dominance over North America.

Whether by land or by sea, eighteenth century colonial travel was arduous, expensive, and many times dangerous. Because of this, few people traveled very far from their homes. Transportation has changed dramatically since the late 1700’s. It was during this time that Colonial America was budding as a new country. This was before airplanes, which appeared in the very early stages of the 1900’s. Cars showed up about the same time, so rewind about 200 plus years and we’re back in colonial America. It wasn’t civilized like it is today. The dirt roads were bumpy, grimy, and when the rains came, they were mud baths. So how did people during this time get around? Often, they didn’t. Not many people could afford the cost of travel back then. Daily American Colonial Life was extremely harsh for the first settlers and colonists. They were faced with a new country, unknown territory and no friends, relatives or neighbors to help them “In those days, it was fairly expensive to travel. Because of this, generally only government officials, merchants, and planters took the risk (Constitution Facts).” Women were supposed to stay home and look after the children while the husband went off to do business. America was still a budding country, so there were not as many cities as there are now and they were more spread out. Once the new world was discovered, it took over a century before England successful began to colonize. When the first town, Jamestown, was established, more towns sprouted up, and eventually colonies were formed along the Atlantic coast. As time went on, these colonies could be grouped by regions. The regions of the New world, though sharing general similarities, had major differences in religion, social organization, economy and ethnic patterns, which set the path for colonial sectionalism at the time.

The Spanish for example, had a military fort in St, Augustine, Florida and carried on missionary activities as far north as Port Royal, South Carolina. Most of their colonization was either religion or military based as they planned to build missions to benefit the peaceful Native Americans and military outposts to deal with the hostile ones. The Spanish planed to use missions to grow their empire within the borders of America. The British on the other hand wished at first exploit the natives, fish and search for passage to the pacific. These were the ideas of Humphrey Gilbert. Gilbert makes a few voyages to America and nothing stays but after Gilbert dies, Sir Walter Raleigh asks to charter a new colony. He establishes the colonies Roanoke and Virginia and he eventually leaves, but in 1607 a joint stock company, the Virginia Company of London founds Jamestown. Eventually John Smith takes over Jamestown John Smith took over as a much more affective ruler. He then maps the colony, explores it and gets corn from the Indians so that the colonists can survive. The French however, did not colonize as much as the British did, and did not wish to harshly change the Native Americans way of life like the Spanish. In the late 16th century through the early 17th, England as well as other European nations rapidly captured and colonized the newly discovered continent known as America. The British Empire sent multiple groups over to land upon the east coast of North America, yet two are the most famous, for they would bond to become one nation: the Chesapeake and New England colonies. Though introvert to one another, these two would unite to form one, regardless of the unique identities that they have. These differences, though many, eventually affected the colonies in both the economic and social views.

Colonization DBQ Although America is based on democratic values, and early colonies demonstrated democratic features, certain aspects of colonial life were not democratic. Virginia’s House of Burgesses was a legislature that was comprised of representatives chosen by the people, an example of a representative democracy (Doc. 6). This was the first democratic government to be established in America. In the house of Burgesses, a group of representatives were elected by the people to represent them and make decisions.

In the 15th century, Spain and Portugal had started the search to make an empire. It was not until 1607 that European colonizers landed in the New World, or what is known today as the United States of America. By 1733, all of the 13 colonies of America were established. Britain gained control of most of these colonies after it defeated the French in the Seven Years’ War. This was a North American conflict that was also a part of a larger land conflict between super powers in Europe like Britain and France.

The British Empire dramatically changed when Christopher Columbus located America. Countries were rushing to get a piece of the shiny new land they could conquer. No country wanted to be left behind on the road to colonization, the more they owned the more powerful they were. The French came and colonized central and northern America. The Dutch collected patchy parts of northern America and Spain got southern America (Keene et al, section 2).

England had first started having settlements in North America during The Age of Exploration, over time thirteen colonies were formed. In 1765 Britain began taxing their American colonies to help make up for the money lost by protecting them in the French and Indian war (bbc.com). This was the beginning of the colonies intolerance for their motherland. They continued to become more frustrated with Britain as they realized that as colonies of Britain they did not have all the same rights as British citizens. In 1775 the civil war between Britain and it’s thirteen colonies had just begun and lasted until 1783(bbc.com).

The fist British settlement in the Americas was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. From 1607 to 1763 the colonies started growing and the colonists had national pride. “This all changed after the Seven Years War (French and Indian War) when the government started imposing new laws.
