How does “The Wife of Bath” demonstrate that Middle English was a transitional period in the history of English? Explain your response using examples from the text, referring to three subsystems of language.

‘The Canterbury Tales’ is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer, between 1387 and 1400. It is the story of a group of thirty people who are travelling as pilgrims to Canterbury Cathedral. The pilgrims come from different layers of society, while they travel to Canterbury Cathedral, they tell stories to pass the time. Chaucer intended each pilgrim to tell multiple stories. Some of the lexemes in the text are no longer understood or used in this current day. These words no longer exist and have died off, this is a result of new words entering at that time with a similar meaning or the society simply found no importance of a particular lexeme. Line 14 shows the Middle English word herkne which now translates to ‘hear or listen’, and also in line 14 the word ‘eek’ which now means to ‘also’. Many linguistic fossils similar to the ones mentions make it difficult and challenging for a reader in today’s age to fuller comprehend the story without a translation. Although, many words are recognisable and have just undergone basic spelling changes and still remain to have to same meaning. The Middle English lexeme ‘housbonde’ first seen in line 6 has developed to ‘husband’. Reasons for the spelling change could be influence from other cultures and languages, the Caxton printing press or in some situation may follow a new pattern of similar sounds.
