Both of these accounts of the story have the skeptical Simon Peter as a witness to the anointing being done sporadically and by a woman . Theorists see this as a connection of Mary of Bethany with the unnamed sinner in the Gospel of Luke. They go further to connect Mary Magdalene with the unnamed sinner and Mary of Bethany. Mary Magdalene is described as having seven demons driven out of her from Jesus. This placed her as a sinner and in the company of the unnamed sinner in Luke’s Gospel. Thus, in theory, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, and the unnamed sinner are one in the same. Since anointment was so important in traditional Christian beliefs, it is unusual for Jesus to allow a sinner to perform such a sacred task. Theorists suggest that it is because Jesus saw her as special, and by allowing her to christen him, he gave her an important status. This is the wedding where Jesus performed one of his miracles, turning water into wine. Both his mother and Mary Magdalene were at the wedding, so theorists are led to believe that the wedding was actually belonging to Jesus since it is never stated whose wedding is taking place. Jesus is also performing roles that a host would normally have, making some believe that it was his wedding. The Gospel of John describes the event at Cana, “on the third day there was a wedding and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’”(John 2:1-2) It seems that Jesus is asked upon to take up the host role and fix the problem with the wine. When he says “my hour has not yet come” he could be saying that his big moment at the altar has not yet
