At first one may think that 16 and 17 year olds are just focused on dating, having fun, and playing sports. Most would assume that they certainly aren’t mature enough or know enough about politics to vote. However, it is just the opposite, 16 and 17 year olds are in fact very qualified to vote and they care about politics. The voting age should be lowered to allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote. 16 and 17 year olds are just as capable as adults in voting, letting them vote would positively affect the voting field in numerous ways, and they are faced many responsibilities similar to adults’.
16 and 17 year olds are just as qualified to vote as adults are. According to the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, a 6th grade education is all that is required for an adult to vote (National Youth Rights). The majority of 16 and 17 year olds have completed more than a 6th grade level of education, so they certainly fit the education standards required for voting. Not only do 16 and 17 year olds tend to be more educated than 6th graders, it is also shown through research that a 16 year old has the same degree of civic knowledge as a 21 year old and that 16 and 17 year olds poses a high enough intellectual level and maturity level to vote like adults (Vote16USA). Youth are also getting smarter. A study conducted by Professor James Flynn shows that IQ scores have gone up in youth. A child who was scored in the top 3% on an IQ test in 1932, would score in the top 25% on the same test today
