Student engagement or the extents to which they participate in activities are key factors to the successful integration into college (Chickering & Gamson, 1987). In the publication, Seven principles of good practice for undergraduate education, Chickering and Gamson (1987) underscored seven categories of effective educational practises, which are student-faculty contact, cooperation among students, active learning, prompt feedback, time on task, high expectations, and respect for diverse talents and ways of learning. The overall scores of studies over decades indicates that student engagement in activities benefit all types of students in different degree fields. The positive interaction with activities creates the needed outcome including grades, satisfaction, and persistence. These give the student the devotion to other educational purposeful activities.. As noted by Chickering and Reisser (1993): “living on campus has long been associated with persistence and student success”. Forest (1985) also performed a study about student academic ability and found that institutions that provided the most extensive orientation, activities and advising programs had higher graduation rates. The University of Hawaii – Manoa was founded in 1907 and is the primary campus of the University of Hawaii System. This university is a popular academic destination of choice for students and faculty who want to live in an exotic location and take advantage of exclusive research opportunities. The University of Hawaii – Manoa is consistently ranked as one of the best educational values for students because of the quality programs and multicultural experience. The 320-acre University of Hawaii – Manoa is located outside of downtown Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu. There are over 150 undergraduate programs offered to students. The most popular majors include nursing, psychology, communications, accounting and tourism management. The universities’ most highly respected academic programs are marine biology and oceanography.

Western Oregon’s retention rate for part-time students is 36%, while their rate for full-time students is 72%. This statistic speaks loudly for the good environment, social community, and classroom environment! The safe environment of this small liberal arts college brings many students in to the college. The serious crime rate (per 1000 students per year) is 0.96, the drug or weapon incidents is 5.59, and as you could guess the highest rate is alcohol encounters at 13.12. Though these statistics might seem high they are actually very low compared to other colleges. The graduation rate for males is 33%, while the rate for females is 43%. The rate of getting a bachelor’s degree within four years is 16%, but the percentage goes all the way up to 34% after five years of studies.

The University of Arkansas Fort Smith (UAFS) was established in 1928 as an extension of the public school system in Fort Smith, Arkansas. It was known originally as Fort Smith Junior College until 1950, and it initially only occupied 15 acres. Today, the UAFS campus has approximately thirteen buildings in which classes are held in. There are several buildings that are on campus that do not hold classrooms for learning such as the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, the Boreham Library, the Business Center, the Recreation and Wellness Center (RAWC), and the Lion’s Den. There is a total of 66 campus buildings and facilities on and off campus, and there is 1.16 million building square feet maintained by UAFS (“Why UAFS”). Each building on campus illustrates something different; there are several buildings that are new to our campus also. One building that is not new to our campus, but certainly grabs the eye of many students by either a positive or negative way is the building Gardner. Gardner is one of the oldest buildings on the UAFS campus, but besides the unusual layout that can be an inconvenience at times, the building has history, character, and beauty that out ways the negative any day.

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is one of the largest universities in Tennessee; however, they do not offer enough housing to provide for all of their students. As a result, students are expected to find their own housing off-campus. Hence, students must live in off-campus apartment complexes that are expensive, too far away, and difficult for young students to rent. While there are some benefits to off-campus housing, students face many problems in securing these types of housing situations. The prices of off-campus housing are high and the locations are often too far away from campus to walk. In addition, many apartment complexes do not want young, college-aged people living there.

Eastern Illinois University is situated in small town Charleston Illinois in the Midwest region of the United States. Eastern Illinois University was originally founded in 1895 as a teacher’s college and had only a 2-year degree for training teachers for the schools of East Central Illinois, it was known as “Eastern Illinois State Normal School.” “Eastern Illinois State Normal School” had its name changed two more times before finally becoming Eastern Illinois University in 1957. Eastern Illinois University held its first classes in 1899 with 18 faculty members and 125 students. Eastern Illinois University chose its mascot the Panther in 1930 after many years of being called the Blue and Gray.

Henderson State University was known as “Henderson-Brown College” in the 1920’s. Originally founded as the Arkadelphia Methodist College in 1890, Henderson’s official name was then for the second time in its history changed to Henderson-Brown to honor Walter William Brown in 1911. Brown was Henderson’s friend and business partner. Looking through the yearbooks of this time period one could see a college filled with arts and ambitions. At the beginning of the decade Henderson-Brown had only eighteen students in its senior class, reaching a peak of only forty five seniors throughout the decade. There are over one thousand colleges in the U.S, but the University of Southern California is the college to attend for various reasons. USC is a well rounded school that provides a variety of clubs, activities, scholarship opportunities, and academic classes. The faculty and staff of the University of Southern California work hard to make each student that attends successful and well-prepared for the working environment in the near future.

I, Flora Ajayi, was dismissed from the Nursing program at The College of New Jersey due to my performance in Principles of Microbiology (BIO 144) and Anatomy & Physiology II (BIO 142 ), which are major Nursing prerequisites. I take responsibility for my academic progressions and understand the consequences and rewards of the Academic realm. The study habits that allowed me to flourish in high school, for example, studying class notes and reviewing a week before the exam, simply did not work in college. This forced me into a state of panic, which led me not to do well in both science classes. Studying effectively in college is different than studying in high school due to the rigor of the course and my attempt to process on a higher academic level. My inability to succeed in the sciences during my spring semester, despite my early success, has allowed for both personal growth and self-reflection while repeating BIO 144 and BIO 142.

With outreach from student and academic affairs and the creation of “Blue Ribbon” committees (Zhang, 2010) institutions are well underway to addressing the issues mentioned above. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill opened in 1795 as the first public college in the United States. Since then, free speech and the formation of independent ideas and opinions have been seen as integral parts of a student’s educational experience. Unfortunately, through the categorization of public college campuses as designated public forums and the implementation of restrictive student conduct codes and debilitating free speech zones, universities are denying students the expression they deserve. While these policies were originally created to protect students, they are now leading to a rising number of student tensions, lawsuits, and constitutional arguments. In 2005, Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) initiated the pursuit of Substantive Change from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) with the intent to initiate two advanced degree programs, the Doctor of Education (Ed.D) and the Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.). The administration of LMU, following Procedure One of the SACS Commission of College’s (SACSCOC) Substantive Change for Accredited Institutions Policy, provided a letter stating this intent on April 6, 2005 to the Executive Director of SACSCOC. Feasibility studies were conducted and both programs were recommended to the Board of Trustees. LMU submitted an Application for Member Institutions Seeking Accreditation at a More Advanced Degree Level, which requested both the programs be considered and the University move from Level IV to Level V in accreditation status. The following onsite, pre-accreditation team visited LMU in the fall of 2005 the decision was made to first pursue the D.O. degree program and postpone the Ed.D. Program. On October 2, 2006 SACSCOC officially received LMU’s application for a level change to establish a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, submitted to the Compliance and Reports (C&R) Committee for review at their December meeting. A letter was sent to LMU on January 9, 2007 that stated “The Commission on Colleges awarded membership at Level V to offer the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and authorized a Substantive Change Committee to visit the institution to review

College can be very overwhelming and stressful at times. Many students struggle to keep up with all their assignments and due dates. There are many resources on college campuses that can aid students in time management; paper writing and studying habits, but the main resource that students tend to neglect are their professors. Professors are the ones that are teaching the material, assigning the homework and making the test. Student faculty interactions can be crucial to a student’s success in college. Whether it is for internship opportunities or recommendations, teacher’s jobs are to help students learn and succeed. Teachers are a great, free resource in college that seems to go unnoticed. Student-faculty interactions have major effects on a student’s self-efficacy and academic integrity. These are just a handful of the countless effects of student-faculty involvement.
