The Shipman’s Tale, one of the many tales in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, is exactly suited to the Shipman’s personality and profession as given in “The Prologue.” The shipman is described by Chaucer in the prologue as very sneaky, deceitful, and even pirate-like. The Shipman’s tale matches his personality and profession because The Shipman’s Tale is one of trickery and con. The monk in the tale tricks both the merchant and the merchant’s wife out of their money. He also uses his relationship with the merchant to his advantage, because he knows the merchant would never suspect him of having sex with his wife. The shipman is also portrayed in the prologue to have no sense of remorse or feelings of sorrow.

Symbolism allows writers to suggest their ideas within a piece of literature. This is found in most types of writing. Stephen Crane expresses this in his short story, The Open Boat. Through symbolism and allegory, it is demonstrated that humans live in a universe that is unconcerned with them. The article Desperation at Sea by Rebecca Zissou tells us about people trying to escape war, poverty and natural disaster. First, on April 17, 2015 Ali 70 other migrants were migrating to Europe and start anew life but thousands of of people died trying to cross to Europe. Secondly, people were snuggled into plastic boats and abandon them to protect them selfs. Then, some passengers get to stay in Europe permanently. After that they need to find a job and often fight for it. Finally, this book was about escaping from their homeland.

In The Seafarer one difference is this is a self imposed exile. He was not forced to leave, he chose to leave. The speaker of The Seafarer says his journey is true and he remembers every little detail that happened to him while traveling the ocean in the middle of a cold winter. He experiences loneliness, and hatred for city people. He remembers his struggle through the long cold days. He believes he was called out and that is why he leaves his country. “Called me eagerly, sent me over the horizon.”

A major source of Anglo-Saxon anxiety was the threat of exile. Exile is to be banished or kicked out of a place or group. Exile can be a punishment enforced by others, or self-imposed. Exile was considered one of the worst punishments given, the fear of loneliness keeps people in line and this is why exile was used as a punishment. The fear of exile is included in the lyrics of “The Seafarer”, “The Wanderer”, and “The Wife’s Lament”.

The exiles in the in the Exeter book all have one key detail in common, them being in exile. However, the exact reason for the exile is unique for each of them. In “The Seafarer”, his exile is voluntary. The narrator doesn’t actually have to be living at sea, he wishes to. He wants to live at sea because he believes life on Earth is short and he must do good to be able to go to heaven. He does not want to be like the men on land, who think their riches will hide their sins from God. “The Seafarer” is unlike “The Wanderer’s” narrator. He is exiled after the death of his Lord when he cannot find another one. Exile utterly miserable, it is comparable to torture to him. The narrator in “The Wife’s Lament” shares the same feelings as “The Wanderer”,

It’s easy to tell that the ocean is a mysterious and isolating place from all of the tragic tales we hear from sailors both real and fictional. Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and an anonymous author’s “The Seafarer” are quite similar in that they both revolve around said tragic tales told by sailors. However, there seem to be more commonalities between their themes, tones, and messages rather than their seaward-bound settings. But before we can discuss these similar settings and deeper themes, we have to tackle their origins.

Unlike the wandering narrator, the seafaring narrator focuses his descriptions of the community that is present in nature. The seafarer the utterly rejects the notion that a “sheltering family / could bring consolation for his desolate soul” (25-26). This “sheltering family” (25) that the seafaring narrator alludes to in this line is the exact form of close-knit family that the narrator in “The Wanderer” laments for desperately. While the seafaring narrator offers striking similar descriptions of the landscape being “bound by ice” (9), he does not focus on these descriptions to dwell on the loss of an earthly community. Instead, the narrator in “The Seafarer” finds the landscape that he inhabits wonderfully abundant with natural — even spiritual — elements that are commonly associated with an earthly community. In the barren landscape, the seafaring narrator discovers “the wild swan’s song / sometimes served for music” (19-20) and “the curlew’s cry for the laugher of men” (20-21).
