The principles of personal leadership emphasize that people who read the article should avoid distractions and analyze the article in its entirety. Absorbing the content will challenge the reader to think critically and respond accordingly to the material. Additionally, readers need to grasp the message within the article, so they will gain a better understanding of the content. Furthermore, I believe the article paints a visual picture on how people will celebrate your life when you pass away. Viewing a funeral of myself where I’m listening and watching everybody responses and reactions respectively, would be interesting to observe. As the attendees congregate on my behalf, for the service, I would like for the speakers to indicate that I made a positive impact in their lives and influenced them to achieve whatever endeavors they desire. Leaving a legacy for others to follow will keep my memories alive and allow people to remember the principles and standards that I lived by. For example, Malcolm X was a civil rights activist and a prominent figure during the 1950’s and 1960’s articulating concepts of race pride. Malcolm X knew he was a dead man walking, yet, he continued to fight for the people by instilling confidence within the Harlem community. Even though Malcolm X has been dead for over 50 years, people will never forget his contributions where he left an indelible mark on society. Malcolm X impact on society is immeasurable and his legacy will live on forever.

The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past, present and future, my personal philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your foundation of leadership came from, you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if don’t pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner’s Mate rating has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31 Gunner’s Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner’s Mates in the Coast Guard that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner’s mates (9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a young Gunner’s Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact.
According to dictionary.com leadership is defined as, the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group: Its synonyms include guidance, influence, control, direction and supervision. These are all qualifications that are needed to be an effective leader. All characteristics are not necessarily needed at the same time and do no need to be used for each subordinate. This paper will identify my personal leadership philosophy along with theories to support my leadership style.

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little was a civil rights activist along with being the voice of the Black Muslim religious group. Malcolm was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the fourth child of eight siblings born to Earl and Louise Little. While Louise was a stay at home mom or housewife, Earl Little was a preacher along with being an active member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. He was also a big supporter of Marcus Garvey, an advocate of the Black Nationalism and Pan African movements. As a result of Mr. Little being a civil rights activist, his family was punished for it with constant harassment from many white supremacist groups such as the Klu Klux Klan. The harassment the family endured forced them to move many times. In 1926 Mr. little moved his family from Nebraska to Wisconsin and then in 1928, moved to Lansing, Michigan. In 1931 while living in Michigan, Earl Little was found dead lying across streetcar tracks. Malcolm’s family strongly believed it was a murder but the police ruled Earl’s death an accident. Earl’s
Malcolm x was a civil rights activist and a prominent islamic minister during the civil rights era. Malcolm x is widely known for his speeches while within the nation of islam, Which is a small group of black muslims that believe in black nationalism. while with the nation of islam malcolm referred to his speeches as being wrong since the nation of islam preached that blacks are superior to all others. After Malcolm x left the nation of islam he embarked on a journey to Mecca called the Haj. when Malcolm came back he preached a different message than before he was more optimistic of a peaceful revolution. Unfortunately as malcolm had this change in ideology he was assassinated by three members of the nation of islam.
Philosophy is "the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge or conduct."(Stuart Berg Flexner and Lenore Crary Hauck, 1993). Leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Command is the authority a person in the military service lawfully exercises over subordinates by virtue of his rank and assignment or position.(FM 6-22) My leadership philosophy has been developing thru my Army career. I have use the NCO creed as a pillar for my Leadership philosophy. The outcome of my performance is a direct reflects of my subordinates. My ideas will not always the best, that is why my Soldiers have a open door to provide any feedback.
Leadership represents an essential element for the success of an organization, it has a profound impact on the achievement of the goals. The leadership unites an organization efforts and directs toward the behavior of individuals in line with the achievement of objectives and deliverables. Organizations composed of members from different cultures, mentalities, and personalities representing groups of people work together in a specific regulatory framework and in accordance with certain operating procedures. These groups or work teams need to coordinate among them in order to reach the specific objectives. In this context, it always highlights the role of leadership in influencing an organization. The Strategic Leadership Instructor is doing his best to develop our leadership, and exploiting his innate cleverness and natural sensation to support his fellows to succeed. He helps us in enabling of taking advantage of the actual innate sixth sense that God gave it, and exploiting the energy and the ability to distinguish. I learned a lot from readings and during the sessions, I learned from my colleagues some of the basic functions of leadership through their experiences. I learned how to develop my skills that will support my style of leadership. My personal leadership philosophy describes who I am as a Soldier, a Non- Commissioned Officer, and a man who serves his country proudly. As a leader, I believe that all members of my team are important. As a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, I believe, as the NCO creed says, “Non-Commissioned officers are the backbone of the Army.” It is very important to know your role as a NCO and fulfill all of your duties and responsibilities inherent in that role. We can all contribute to the mission and we have to understand that no one job is more important than the other. Teamwork is always provided in my leadership philosophy and if we all work together as a team we will all have the ability to make a positive difference in each other lives. The text will cover a number of different aspects of leadership. We will consider my personal understanding of leadership and it relates to certain leadership theories. In my philosophy of leadership, I will address what role I believe a health care leader should play, what leadership theory they should follow, and why leaders should follow that theory. It will describe my current sphere of influence and how it has shaped my understanding of leadership. I will explain how I am a leader in my current position and how I apply my leadership philosophy within my position. Then I will provide how I see the use of informal, formal, positive and negative power as it applies to my personal philosophy of leadership.
I took something away from the different sources of power. Power is the capacity of potential to influence. Power can corrupt good leaders. Power, by its nature, it is powerful and tasteless like carbon monoxide. The more powerful one becomes, the more likely we are to overestimate our own mental virtue. There is position, power and personal power. Power can be more deadly than drugs. Many leaders allow power to go to their heads. They forget what and who was important to them. They allow power to consume them.
My father once told me that, “everything we do— be it in academia, at work, social or family life—we are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life.” I believe that every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our ability to lead or be led.
Malcolm X, an unlikely hero has become the leader for the people by changing the face of the Civil Rights Movement through militant means; but ultimately the CIA turned against him because of his associations with Communist leaders. He was targeted throughout his years after shifting to a vision of peace, truth, wisdom and freedom. He had gotten out of the darkness by God’s will, but haters and or racial discriminators pressured him for the color of his skin.“I am not a racist. I am against every form of racism and segregation, every form of discrimination. I believe in human beings, and that all human beings should be respected as such, regardless of their color”(Brainyquote) ~Malcolm X. He was a nonviolent person who wants to bring his community together, but others believe what they want to, therefore Malcolm gets back to crime and jail. Malcolm says;“We are nonviolent with people who are nonviolent with us.” What ever actions and programs people use to tackle us down we answer respectfully and peacefully.” Malcolm faced a lot of hate and strong tension in his community and towards him before he passed away. However, he could care less for the hate and he started on a new journey looking for answers to solve the big picture of discrimination and segregation.
Through identification and ongoing assessment of her leadership style and ability this leader is able to develop and understand her own strengths and limitations in order to grow and develop into a more effective leader. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of servant leadership, contingency, path-goal styles leadership to gain an understanding of current leadership models, identify this author’s style of leadership and explore why leadership is important to organizations, society and this author.
As a graduate student approaching her final semester in school, thoughts regarding my leadership abilities in the soon-to-be “real world” have occupied my mind lately. To further explore and develop my ideas about leadership, I decided to develop my personal leadership theory. So, I asked myself the following questions: What makes a successful leader? How do you recognize a leader when you meet one?, and lastly, what is my theory of leadership? With this last question I thought about what leadership meant to me personally and how I personified it in a role of authority. While I had given thought to how I led, I had rarely taken the time to fully understand what my personal leadership theory entailed. Throughout the length of this paper I will analyze how my leadership skills, traits, values and elements from both Authentic Transformational theories help me to shape my leadership philosophy. In doing so I hope to define the leadership values that influence the way I view and practice leadership.
