What is a hero? Many people have different views on what a hero is, but most would not consider a gangster to be one. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a story of two gangs in Oklahoma, the greasers and the Socs. They fight against each other and the law. When a few of the Socs and greasers get tied up in the feud, many of the characters show heroism. The Outsiders includes many characters, but Johnny Cade, Dally Winston and Darrell Curtis stand out as heroes. Johnny comes across as weak and powerless in the beginning of the story, but as his character develops in the story, he shows his heroism by speaking up for people who are helpless and in need. “He started to put his arm around her, but Johnny reached over and stopped him. …show more content…
He took the fall for someone else so they don’t have to go to jail. He saved him from having a criminal record and the danger of jail. Dally took the sentence for Two-Bit and didn’t even say a word. As Johnny said, “that’s gallant.” Even though Dally may not act like a hero all of the time, he can be one when he is really needed. Darry is a hero among his family and friends. He takes care of everyone and puts others before himself. Darry gave up playing football and going to college to raise his two brothers. He works two jobs and Ponyboy really admires that about Darry. “Darry didn't deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty…. But we just didn't have the money for him to go to college… And now he didn't have time between jobs to even think about college” (Hinton 15). Darry was selfless in his decision to give up college. He gave up everything he wanted and liked in life, a great opportunity to go to college so he can raise his brothers. He gave it all up, and that shows true heroism. Darry is a complex hero. He is caring, selfless and loyal. He is loyal to his family and cares about them more than he cares for himself. That is why Darry is real a hero. In The Outsiders Darry, Dally and Johnny display what characteristics make up a heroism. Johnny lives a hard life and has every reason to be upset but, he lives life the best way he
While at a movie theater, Dally is antagonizing and annoying several Soc girls. Johnny stands up to Dally, his hero, and states, “‘Leave her alone, Dally.’ ‘Huh?’ Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny couldn't say ‘Boo’ to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, ‘You heard me. Leave her alone’” (24). It took all of Johnny’s bravery to stand up to his absolute idol. He was willing to stand up to a dangerous boy that could easily defeat him in a fight, to save others. Not only this, but when a church is burning down with children inside, Ponyboy states, ”Johnny wasn't behaving at all like his old self. ... he grinned at me. He wasn't scared either. That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes” (92). Johnny gives his own life for kids who have futures. He charges into the church at full speed when necessary. Johnny becomes brave in the middle of the
Johnny would do anything to save his friends. After Dally drove Pony and Johnny to eat some much- needed food. They came back to see the church that Johnny and Pony were hiding out in on fire. There was a school having a picnic there. Some of the kids trapped inside the church. Without saying anything, Pony jumped out of the car and ran into the burning church with Johnny behind him. Right after saving the kids, Pony described, ‘‘Johnny shoved me out the window. ‘Get out!’ I leaped out the window and I heard timber crashing and the flames roaring right behind me” (Hinton 97). Instead of saving himself, Johnny pushed Pony out the window and saved him. Johnny puts others before himself and is willing to risk his life for others. This act is truly heroic.
As shown from the examples above, Darry is definitely a hero. He takes over as the parents fror his brothers Ponyboy and Sodapop, puts their needs before his own, and loves them unconditionally. Even though sometimes Daarry makes mistakes, and shows tough love, it is clear that he loves his brothers. He is exactly the definition of a hero. There is no other Greaser who shows heroism as much as
To start off, Ponyboy is a hero because of the courage he displays through the book. “I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was: We started it. We started it. We started it!
He lacks decent behavior as shown when he smokes (pg. 12), stays up unreasonably late (pg. 58), and even harasses Cherry Valance as his way of “flirting” (pg. 24). His lack of any sense in general even goes as far as not knowing how valuable friendship is. Regardless of whether Dally is indeed a lovable caring person deep down inside, it really does not matter as he does not know how to express it properly towards the people he cares for; especially towards Johnny. Dally could not comprehend how critical Johnny’s condition was and that sometimes, the most important thing in life was actually near him. In Dally’s case it would have been Johnny’s friendship but he missed the opportunity to tell him how much he matters to him and instead says, “We beat the Socs. We stomped them-outta our territory” (pg.148). After Johnny’s death, Dally finally became aware of how meaningless his life has been this whole time after losing his friend, so he commits suicide by his own will by raising an unloaded gun tricking the police into thinking it was actually loaded after chasing him down for robbing a grocery store (pg.154). This fatal end for Dally just proves what a impulsive and thoughtless person he is as he simply just wasted his life. He could have been considered “gallant” if he gained courage and motivation to start his life over after Johnny’s death, but instead blew the
Johnny was a hero too because before Pony and him stayed at the church. The socs came to Pony and Johnny about why were they walking their girlfriends home. Since the socs are very violent they got Ponyboy and tried to drown him in a fountain. Then Johnny killed one of the socs named Bob because if
Ponyboy is a hero because he went into a burning church and saved the children that were in the the church. Ponyboy is also a hero is because he is a survivor. Ponyboy is a hero because he is not afraid to step up. Ch.8 says a quote from johnny and it says I would, I would help her and Randy both if I could. "Hey," I said suddenly, "can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?" That meant that Ponyboy has the desire to help people in problems which makes him a hero. Another quote was in ch 4 which meant that ponyboy isn’t afraid of anything and it says “You know what a Soc is? I said, my voice trembling with rage. "White trash with Mustangs and madras." And then, because I couldn't think of anything bad enough to call them, I spit at them.” Heroes are people who rescue others or people that do something that is really brave. Ponyboy did that, so he is a hero in that way.
Early on, Pony thinks that Darry doesn’t cares very much about him and would do anything to keep them apart from each other. While walking back home after the movie that pony watched with Cherry Valance, she asked how Darry was compared to Soda. Pony answered, “Darry. . . what was Darry like? ‘He’s. . .’ I started to say he was a good ol’ guy but I couldn’t. I burst out bitterly: ‘He’s not like Sodapop at all and he sure ain’t like me. He’s hard as a rock and about as human. He got eyes exactly like frozen ice. He likes Soda -- but he can’t stand me. I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home somewhere, and he’d do it, too, if Soda’d let him.” (Hinton 42). This demonstrates Pony’s opinion because Pony see's Darry getting along with Soda, Pony believes Darry has the capacity for love, but he just doesn’t have it for Pony. Pony forms his initial opinion because he is very naive. When Darry pushes Pony to get very good grades, Pony believes it is because he wants to be controlling. Originally Pony believes that darry is a horrible guardian but later on in the book he sees the other side of Darry. After Darry and Pony finally got to see each other after Pony ran away, he saw Darry crying while giving him a hug,“Suddenly I realized, horrified, that darry was crying...In that second what Soda and Dally and Two-Bit had been trying to tell me came through. Darry did care about me. Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me.” (Hinton 98). While giving Darry that hug, Pony realized something he never thought would come from darry, Pony saw him crying. For the first time, Pony saw that Darry does everything that he possibly can to help Pony get a better future then what he experienced. Darry tries to give Pony what he missed out on and Pony finally realized is it. This change in opinion for Pony
Ponyboy is a hero, because he save the kids at the church and he could have died. He went into the church and risked his life for the kids in there. Some evidence I have to back up my reason that he is a hero is that he asked where the kids were in the burning church so he could save the. Also, Ponyboy is considered a hero by the teachers who where at the church because they said we think you must have two come from heaven.
Imagine a world where it was poor against rich, where rich had advantages and poor didn't, and most of the poor are heroes. Three people who are heroes in The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton are Darry, Johnny, and Ponyboy. Darry gave up his dreams for his family, Johnny saved children from a burning church, and Ponyboy stuck by his friends during hard times.
In The Outsiders, Dally really helped Pony and Johnny out of a pickle. Dally gave them a gun, and some money to help them run away from the cops. Johnny and Pony hid in an abandoned church in the country. Then, while they were gone a lit cigarette started a fire in that church. Ponyboy and Johnny saved the people stuck in the church and became heroes. They also got
Johnny was the second youngest and the pet of the gang. “If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny.” Johnny had an abusive home life and it impacted his life in many ways. It made him a strong, dependable, inspirational person. He saved his best friend and his hero from a terrible fate. Dally was Johnny’s hero, and Johnny was Dally’s hero. Dally was what all criminals would want to be. He was tough, mean, and empty. Johnny kept Dally alive and made Dally a
Criminals Turns Heroic. In the novel The Outsiders a heroic act was made. This act was made by Johnny, Ponyboy and Dallas (Dally). The heroic act was made in Windrixville, Oklahoma at a worn down church.
Dally can be considered a hero because he helped Johnny and Ponyboy get out of town by giving them money and for their safety he gave them a gun. In addition, he took the blame for something that two-bit did and got arrested to save two-bit from getting into trouble. And finally, he helped Johnny in the burning church by pulling him out to safety. That is heroic because he risked his life for Johnny’s.
Dally told Johnny and Ponyboy what to do after the murder. He instructed them to, “‘Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville.’“ Dally knew of a church in Windrixville that the boys could stay low in for a while until it was safe. He accommodated them with a few supplies, “…He handed us a gun and a roll of bills.” He provided them with some supplies to take with them because he cared about them and wanted to them safe and out of trouble. Dally is a hero because he helped Johnny and Ponyboy from getting in trouble.
