It was not easy for Johnny to move into a new city. It was very problematic for him to move into a new city because he knew no one, and he had no friends. The new city that Johnny moved into was New York. It is also known as The Big Apple. That city has a population of 8.6 million people. New York has many attractions. Examples of them are: Empire State Building, Statue Of Liberty and Time Square. Johnny always had a dream to go to New York and see these attractions, but he did not picture it like this. He did not imagine himself living with his family all bored. He imagined himself partying all night, having friends and having fun. This did not happen. Johnny had multiple problems when he came into New York. Moving in was not his only one. He also had to face the troubles of going to a new middle school. The new school that Johnny had transferred to was Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School. It was a very big school, but very old. The school was old because it was built in the year 1806. Johnny had a hard time fitting in because he was getting bullied by a kid in his class. His name is Jack Foster. Jack was not an average kid. He was much bigger and stronger than any regular kid. Jack is a 7 foot 3 humanoid . He weighs 197 pounds and is very tall. Jack is the most muscular kid in his class. Some words that will describe Jack’s character are the following: strong, selfish, greedy, uncaring and cruel. Jack has one very big interest, and that is bullying kids. Jack would use
New York City’s old slum neighbourhood, the Five Points, was notoriously known for its vice and crimes. The first organized crime group in New York City was the Forty Thieves which was led by Edward Coleman, started in 1825, in the back of a grocery store. The Dead Rabbits were an Irish gang in the Five Points area, and are most known for the riot they caused in 1857. The Eastman Gang were a Jewish group in the Five Points area, which began in the late nineteenth century, and were the rival of the Five Points Gang. The Five Points Gang was another group, started by Paul Kelly and included future famous mobsters. In Five Points, where most of New York City’s crime started, it also started some of history’s most notorious gangs, and mobsters.

Donald Trump speaks among a crowd of hundreds: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” This is how a portion of American citizens perceive immigrants, and as the 2016 Presidential election gets closer the word “immigration” gets treated more delicately as if it were a new phenomenon. However, immigration is no new or delicate subject for New York City. In fact, residents (like in Queens) find it odd if a New Yorker isn’t of hybrid generation (Eichenbaum, Tour). The history of New York City has been painted by the millions and millions of immigrants that have touched its land. It’s a cycle: one group of immigrants come, stay, and leave while another new group of immigrants settle down. This continuous sequence is what makes New York City such an innovative city when it comes to immigrants.
suit. They got their car that was parked in the parking structure and went off to go explore the new city that they would hopefully call home for the rest of their lives. They found one of the best pizza places to eat in New York and sat down to eat because it was really packed and from the outside there was people standing outside. After they went to go check out where the mighty brooklyn dodgers played which was a day that they had a game against the giants, their rivals. They weren't gonna see the game but they pulled to the side right in front of the stadium while the game was going on. You could feel the energy of the crowed going off inside that way they could get their game. They got off the car and you could see inside the stadium
Every time I hear this song it makes me long to leave all of my responsibilities and head off to the city of dreams. A trip to New York has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I have always wanted to visit the place of tall buildings, history, and where culture is intertwined with its people. I have wanted to live the fast pace life of a New Yorker, where I could stand outside and see, smell, and taste all of the experiences that this city has to offer. I have been building and building this ideal image in my mind for so long. If I ever get to New York, will I be disappointed by the city that never sleeps? The city that is a part of almost every movie I watch. Can New York live up to the expectations I have

Imagine that a twelve year old coming home for a twelve hour work day of working with dangerous machinery and having to give your earnings to their parents so that they can help the rest of their family just merely get by that week. By the 1900s, ten to fifteen year olds made up one-fifth of the working population; some of these kids did not even have a family but they were working so that they could stay off of the street. Likewise, immigrants saw working in sweatshops as a way to keep their family from living a homeless lifestyle. New York was the hub for the first sweatshops in America, “Sweatshops first arose in American cities-most notably in New York City- during the nineteenth century and were made possible by the large number of impoverished immigrants willing to endure poor working conditions for low wages” (Tuerk). Immigrants coming to the new world saw many opportunities in sweatshops for a step into a new life, but they found themselves in a trap of fifteen hour work days with hardly any breaks and atrocious working conditions. Many children and immigrants saw working in sweatshops as a way out of their impoverished life and a step into a new life, but these people were sadly mistaken. Many of them became diseased and even died from their over worked bodies and close proximity to one another in the work place. Sweatshops and child labor are an exploitation of human resources and should be abolished; they both started because of an increase in children without
The environmental hazards by responding by responding to natural and man-made disasters have caused a significant incline in the city. Tracking data for different disease and environmental issues indicate a significant correlation amongst each other. Efforts need to be made towards reforming the current structure of the environment in order to preserve it and its citizen. Therefore, the government should be taking action against air pollutions by introducing green energy. The government should be investing in wind energy, and solar energy as well as renewable energy to minimize heavy air pollution. Furthermore, they should encourage manufacturing companies to control the pollutions and creating and energy efficient environment, not
The area that constitutes New York City today was originally populated by the Lenape people. These autonomous groups of Native Americans were “dozen-odd groups” who lived between today’s Eastern Connecticut and central New Jersey. They spoke an Algonquian language, lived in seasonal campsites, and dedicated their lives to fishing, farming, and hunting. The first European to enter the New York Harbor was the Florentine navigator Giovanni da Verraza, who was at the time searching for a northwest passage to Asia. Despite the short visit, he named the area Nouvelle-Angoulême in honor of the principal state of the King of France (Burrows and Wallace).
When I first examined the photo of the construction workers in New York City, my impression was they were passing something heavy like in a bucket brigade line. I saw their shoulders were curved over and their hands were straining which all the visuals cues were in place telling me they were working.
The first native New Yorkers were the Lenape, an Algonquin people who hunted, fished and farmed in the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers. Europeans began to explore the region at the beginning of the 16th century--among the first was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian who sailed up and down the Atlantic coast in search of a route to Asia--but none settled there until 1624. That year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on “Nutten Island” (today’s Governors Island) that they called New Amsterdam. In 1626, the settlement’s governor general, Peter Minuit, purchased the much larger Manhattan Island from the natives for 60 guilders in trade goods such as tools,
In the heart of New York City, the lives of Melvin Udall, Carol Connely, Simon Bishop, and Frank Sachs collided every day. However, when tragedy struck not only did they form mutual friendships, they helped each other become their best selves. While there were several interesting characters in this film, I chose to focus on the life of Simon Bishop (Brooks, 1997).
Many people have heard of the first settlements and are aware of the early humans but many aren’t aware of the urban revolution. “The Urban revolution- that is features that set cities apart from earlier forms of human settlement” (PALEN, J. J. (1987). The urban world. New York: McGraw-Hill Book.) Two important characteristics of the urban revolution are permanent settlement in dense aggregation and technological evolution.
The whole setting of this book revolves around three of the boroughs in New York, Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens. The first borough that plays a very cohesive part in the book is the most densely populated borough found in New York which is Manhattan. Now, Manhattan plays a big role, mainly for one of the main rivaling characters, Hunter Alden III. He met his wife during the humongous incident of 9/11 where many people suffered and has chosen to build an extraordinarily large two story building for him, his son Tripp and his wife to live in at Manhattan to keep the parent’s memories when they first met. The house has very stony and rough walls throughout the outside of the house and has a huge black fence around all the land. When you enter
I remember the itchy, navy blue seat. It scratched my leg every time my skirt rode up. Except I was too busy looking out the window to care. The clouds rolled outside the airplane, forming into different shapes and sizes. I saw bird shaped clouds turn into trucks and book shape clouds turn into elephants. My mother sat to the left of me and peered over me whenever she looked outside of the plane; for it was her first time on a plane as well. We were flying to New York. Mama told me that people called New York City “The Big Apple.” I didn't understand why New York was called that, but I never asked anyone, I was too excited to land. Soon, a man's voice sounded out of nowhere, “Everybody fasten your seatbelts as we make our way into New York
