Most scholars still till this day reconsider if the Renaissance was an actual time period or if it was just an extension of the Middle Ages. The Italian Renaissance had two distinct periods during its lifetime. The first being the “Early Renaissance”, which took place between the late 13th and the early 14th centuries. The second period was known as the “High Renaissance”, which took place during the 15th and 16th centuries. These two periods had very distinct foundations and styles behind the art and architecture of their respective periods. The Early Renaissance revived many old themes which later became the foundations for the High Renaissance. While the High Renaissance strayed from previous traditions and had its own form of art and essentially perfected early themes and styles of art and included more scientific/mathematic components.

The Renaissance period is known for the revival of the classical art and intellect born in ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance is also a time that is marked by growth, exploration, and rebirth. The Italian Renaissance started in Florence and progressively made its way into Venice and then into the great city of Rome. During the Renaissance, Rome was home to some of the most renowned works of art and the finest architectural masterpieces in the world - too many that still holds true today. Along with the delicate architecture and grand artistry, Rome was also home to a mixture of people and cultures. It is in this cultural context and through the book A Street Life in Renaissance Rome: A Brief History with Documents, that understanding how men, woman, and specifically Jews and Christians lived in Rome becomes important to better understand this period of renewal.

Italy can be looked at as the home of the renaissance and consequently the immergence of great art. Artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and Raphael are some of the greats and are looked at for standards. But what about the artists whose lives are mysteries, and their works that were influenced by the greats? These artists hold just as much importance in the history of art as do the artist’s whose names can be recalled off the top of an average person’s head. During the sixteenth century things began to change in the art world, and that change was the Baroque. This new style of art brought a revolution to how subject matter was painted, it brought upon “… a radical reconsideration of art and its purposes…” (249) and how artists of all ranks could learn to paint the up and coming style of Baroque.

The Renaissance, a time defined as the rebirth of classical ideals, occurred in Italy between 1350 and 1600. Spreading quickly throughout Europe, with the innovation of the printing press, it caused rippling effects. The Renaissance ultimately altered the aged education of theology from the Dark Ages and renewed it with studies of more ancient, classic works. Classic art and literature grew extremely popular, contrasting the lack of interest in them before. Many artists became prominent advocates for the revival of the ideals of the classical past. The artists, using their masterpieces, tremendously determined how modern historians view the era. While several aspects of the Renaissance contributed and influenced the time, artists like Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raffaello Sanzio had a stronger effect on and are greater representations of the time.

When discussing the Renaissance; the most intimate area of focus are, art and architecture. Although no one really talks about Renaissance being an obvious era of some of the greatest and most innovative masters of painting, sculptures and builders. Or even that It is also the most influential eras that marked the emergence of a great deal of Scholars, thinkers, writers and philosophers. Regardless the Renaissance (a French word for “rebirth”) was a much needed time for awakening, from the intellectual darkness of the medieval direction, and the rise of many, concepts that would form the basis for civilization as we know it today. Renaissance is a term that was created in the nineteenth century originally to symbolize the revival of art and letters from the influences of ancient Roman and Greek models. The Renaissance was unquestionable, a distinct era. Logical thoughts and morals from the ancient Greek and Roman individuals headed towards humanistic beliefs and encouraged people to become multi-talented people. As a result, the Renaissance people became a prominent population. As the ideals of the people changed, religion could no longer control their lives and Allowed advancements in all characteristics of life to virtually improved.

The Renaissance was a time of creativity and perspective. A time where artists thrived. Some Renaissance artist included Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Titian. Each of these artists worked for Patrons, the people who paid them to create art.

This new study of the ancient world led to humanism. Humanism was an intellectual movement that focused on human achievements and potential. Humanists studied the classic texts to understand ancient Greek values. The word humanist and humanism come from the Latin word humanitas, which refers to the literary culture that every educated person should possess. Humanists study subjects common to classical education; such as history, literature, and philosophy along with rhetoric. These subjects are considered the Humanities. These classical traditions were passed on by humanists to artists and architects.

The Italian renaissance was a period of creative explosion. The term renaissance symbolizes rebirth, which is exactly what occurred in Italy during this time. An entire culture was remade through art. There was a resounding interest in the classics created by ancient artists. The humanist movement encouraged the study of humanity’s history in order to create a deeper understanding of how to move forward as a society. There was a seemingly unquenchable thirst for knowledge and creation. Many new art forms developed in this period, including opera. The Florentine Camerata, a group of scholars, created early forms of opera. Claudio Monteverdi, a renaissance composer, developed opera into the art form that is still performed today. The work of the Florentine Camerata and Claudio Monteverdi worked in harmony to create and develop this new form of music. Monteverdi’s educational background, his rebellious drive to create, his serendipitous career, and his unequaled talent allowed him to develop opera into an art form that no other composer of the time could have produced.

The Renaissance was a period in the fourteenth century where art and architecture flourished. Many places such as Florence and Venice were the high points of this period and during this time you have many artist whom, even to this day, are still renowned for their genius artwork done during this time. The impact that this time period had on the world of art is incomparable to any other time thereafter. One of these innovative artist is Michelangelo Buonarroti, who is revered as one of the greatest artists during the Renaissance period.

In the late 14th century to the 16th century, the Italian Renaissance was taking place and moving from the Middle Ages at a time when the Catholic Church was indomitable to a period called The Renaissance. After this “rebirth” in Italy began, it started spreading to other countries to then produce a French Renaissance, an English Renaissance, and so on. Italy served a sort of birth place for the Renaissance in European culture. During this time period, more and more people were placing humans as the center of life and art, and the way they viewed every day concepts and ideas were becoming more complex. They started questioning things that were never questioned in past and exploring ideals that were never once explored. The people started breaking from the mold that society had set for them, and some faced repercussions because of this. The people who were practicing this new way of thinking viewed it as a time of powerful wisdom and classical learning after such a cultural decline.

The Renaissance was considered one of the most creative and influential time periods in history, the genius of the Italian Renaissance and their prolific artwork still influence our daily lives in the areas of math, science, literature, history and music. Leonardo da Vinci,Michelangelo and Raphael are the three giants of the italian renaissance, they were inspired by mathematicians,philosophers and astronomers of the ancient Greek and Roman civilization, and changed the way that we view the world by restating and innovating old ideas and even creating new ones. The Renaissance is a time of rebirth. The world-view changed from a religious view to a Humanistic view. It focused on realism and man rather than spiritually and God; the belief was that man can control his fate. People started using reason to solve problems, they questioned truth, they became innovative, and people tried to understand the world. Man begins to think of himself so he starts venturing outward. Artists in this time tried to create new and innovative ways to create and do art. Many people tried to conceal religious things in art because if the church found out it could kill the artist for heresy. People looked back to philosophers in Greece and Rome for guidance.

The Renaissance was a wonderful time for artists and creativity because the time period was innovative. Taking place from the 1400’s to the 1700’s, it was a chance for authors, playwrights, and artists to display their pieces. Though the catholic church may not have approved of the works, they had to deal with some of it. This is because leaders can only control so much. The people of the time influenced the Renaissance but the Renaissance also influenced it’s people. In turn it influenced the people’s stories, paintings, and drawings.
