The Metamorphosis is a novella written by German author Franz Kafka which was first published in 1915. The novella tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who one day awoke to discover he had transformed into an insect like monstrosity. Throughout the story, Gregor struggles with the horrible prospect of coming to terms with his situation, as well as coping with the effects of his transformation, such as the fact that his family is repelled by his new form, and that he is no longer able to provide financially for them. Through Gregor’s reaction to the effects of his transformation on his life, Kafka critiques the situation of the common man in a modern world. One instance that Kafka uses to critique the modern man’s situation in the novella is the opening scene. Although, upon waking up, Gregor immediately discovers he has transformed into a monstrosity, instead of his mind being occupied by thoughts on how such a thing could have taken place and what effects it will have on his life as a whole, he instead ponders on mundane topics such as paying of his family’s debt and reaching work on time. This is shown in Gregor’s thoughts, “If I didn 't have my parents to think about I 'd have given in my notice a long time ago, I 'd have gone up to the boss and told him just what I think… let him know just what I feel.
