“Which came out the open door- the lady, or the tiger?” (Stockton 19) Which emotion is more powerful, love or jealousy? In the short story “The Lady, or the Tiger?” by Frank R. Stockton, a journey is taken to a kingdom with a rather insane method of punishment for any man resumed guilty of a crime. In this fictional story the king's daughter, the princess falls into an intense love with a common man, the courtier. Such a thing had never been heard of then, even though it happens in books and movies all of the time now. With such a crime being committed the king had no other choice but to throw the young courtier into the arena to choose his own fate, but he let his princess choose it for him… The lady, or the tiger? Although the princess was hesitant in her decision it was clear that she had chosen the door with the tiger behind it. One of the many details that made the princess’s decision so obvious was the almost tangible and excruciating jealousy that she held for the lady behind the door. She hated the lady with a passion: “How her soul had burned in agony when she’d seen him rush to meet the women, with her flushing cheek and sparkling eye of triumph.” (19). Stockton’s story left it’s reader without answers. It made people ask themselves the purely opinionated question of which feeling really is more significant, love or jealousy? Although the author does not blatantly tell his own answer, in this case it was clearly jealousy. The princess had so much hate in her heart for the lady behind the door on the left because she didn’t want her to steal her one true love. The short fictional story “The Lady, or the Tiger?” is important because it is a very influential and potent reading.
