I think the island in important because that Why did the hunting on the island start? Why were the characters chosen to be hunted? The book doesn't say why the hunting started but my theory is that the multiple people being hunted were considered a threat to society. If this is true wouldn't the public be concerned? Imagine these hunters were part of the government. There are many things we don't know about the world that the government doesn't tell us. If that's the case the public wouldn't know. Another theory I have is overpopulation. The amount of people in this world is growing each day. To be exact, 353,000 babies are born each day. And one day we could possibly run out of space. I think that the people being hunted may be considered useless or unimportant. So they were chosen to be killed. To make more room for other, more important people. Why was the island included in the first place? This book could have been written without the island and it wouldn't affect anything. But if I had to take a guess it would be that the island was included in the story because that is the first memory she regained. In that memory she remembers that people where trying to kill her. Which made her more aware. So she wasn't going to just be killed right away. Then end of
