Practicum at Harold Panabaker Junior High has highlighted several new experiences, particularly it was the first time I participated in a school undergoing a major internal restructure. Consequently, the loss of the French immersion program has left its spot regarding the size and academic success of the school and therefore it makes sense that there is only a year long development plan focused on literacy and academic standing as opposed to the standard holistic three-year development plan (Harold Panabaker, 2017-2018). However, while academic success is important there is a greater need to focus on the health and wellbeing of the students with regards to the development plan. Therefore, focusing on a smaller part of your development …show more content…
For example, water systems in science, hydration in physical education, historic events surrounding water in social studies, and even an indigenous perspective through investigating the pollution of Athabasca lake. The next stage would involve a fundraising activity by students, perhaps through an event like the math market, to raise money for the purchase and installation of the bottle station. Ideally, the parent council would also contribute funds, perhaps match the student amount, expanding it to a community wide event. Finally, experts would be invited in to explain the benefits of water or explain how the bottle stations are installed and operate.
Rationale
Overall, once finalized the health promotion program would lend itself extremely well to all the pillars of the comprehensive health plan but less so to the policy portion of the plan. The comprehensive health plan (2018) states that policies are the guidelines and practices that shape and promote student well-being and achievement, however I believe that while schools may promote healthy alternatives there is little that can be done to ensure students follow through with guidelines. To overcome this limitation the other three pillars would need to effectively demonstrate the importance of hydration through water while making it accessible. Together the three pillars would strengthen and elevate the policy pillar making it more effective in aiding student well-being.
My goal in the area of health is to prevent the spread of illness, keep the environment as clean as possible, and follow sound nutrition and fitness policies to help children and families live a healthy lifestyle. In group care, it can sometimes be hard to control the spread of germs and disease, so I follow proper hand washing, sanitation, diapering, and food preparation guidelines at all times. I also follow my center’s sick policy by informing families about communicable diseases, observing children closely, and sending sick children home right away. I also prepare my snack menu carefully by following the food pyramid, ensuring at least two food groups, and strictly limiting processed and sugary foods. I am also proactive about health in fitness in my classroom, as I teach children about making good choices and how to lead a fun and active lifestyle. We have sports, creative movement or outdoor play several times each day to stay active. We also inform families of our health and fitness goals so they can support the goal of a healthy active lifestyle.
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health and wellbeing (Maggie & Scaffa, 2013). It has three key strategies including advocate, enable, and mediate (Tucker, Vanderloo, Irwin, Mandich & Bossers, 2014). Health promotion is through these three strategies that aim to achieve the five actions of the Ottawa Charter which include build healthy public policy; create supportive environments; strength community action; develop personal skills; and reorient health services (Tucker, Vanderloo, Irwin, Mandich & Bossers, 2014). In addition, the values of the health promotion include empowerment; equity and social justice; health as a human right; health as a holistic concept; and respect for cultural diversity (Tucker, Vanderloo, Irwin, Mandich & Bossers, 2014). There are a wide ranges of specific interventions, such as back education program for school children to improve back posture,

I feel like schools should pay closer attention monitoring the health of children because health is such an important factor in everyday life and not all children are given that luxury at home. Some students might feel that they are overweight and schools can help students understand what the real definition of overweight is, how can they stop becoming overweight and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes the stigma of being overweight can lead to eating disorders of students so it’s good to promote positive eating
“The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake” a quote made by the First Lady, Michelle Obama, as she launches her comprehensive initiative to change the way children think about nutrition and physical fitness (“Learn the Facts,” 2010). Three decades ago, children lived active lives that kept them healthier. They walked to and from school, ate home cooked, reasonable portion meals with vegetables and played outdoors most of the time. Today, children ride the bus instead of walk, eat more fast food and snacks throughout the day because parents are busier, and watch more television or play video games rather than be active outside with peers (“Learn the Facts,” 2010). Young children are becoming overweight and obese along with being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes more frequently. They are making poor dietary choices, inadequate physical activity, and spending too much screen time all contributing to the obesity crisis. One of the effective solutions to reversing the trend of childhood obesity is to provide safe, affordable and accessible after-school health and physical fitness educational programs for all school ages across the nation.
Implementing these lifestyle habits will result in healthier people and lowered rates of chronic illness. One avenue to best prevent the development of chronic disease is to have health and wellness programs in the community, workplace, and schools (NCSL, 2012). If the population was properly educated on how to realistically live healthy lifestyles, then it would be easier to change and adopt healthier habits. This is especially true for adolescents in the school system. If nutrition and health classes were mandatory components of education across the nation, children would be able to learn healthy habits early on in life and more easily maintain those habits as they grow older. Results of these programs would be vastly beneficial due to a reduction in chronic disease prevalence. In addition to promoting healthy lifestyles and chronic disease prevention, discovering and implementing newly effective treatments are paramount to reduce chronic disease. With more advanced technology and medications, early detection and management of chronic diseases are improved and risks for CCM are reduced (Chatterjee et al., 2014). These improvements will not only
The proposal uses techniques through a MAP-IT technique and uses SMART goals to implement their initiative. When writing goals using the SMART goal process nurses must evaluate their goals based on the time frame they need to apply their desired outcomes (Healthedpartners, 2014). These goals for community health promotion programs should be specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and time sensitive goals for community designs. A weakness noted is that when navigating through the website of Healthy People 2020 there appears to be an overwhelming amount of information and some of it appears to be re-iterated from page to page. I believe that maybe this can be condensed between the topics and objectives and the leading health indicators. Healthy People 2020 has over 42 topic areas with 1200 objectives with a smaller selection noted to be the leading health indicators. This can be very confusing for the reader when trying to navigate. When reviewing the progress update of the health indicators I noticed that there was a weakness here that only 4 indictors exceeded their target goals (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of Healthy People.gov,
Health promotion is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the process which helps people take control over the determining factors of their health which in turn will help to improve their health. With multiple determining factors of health, health promotion means working between the community and health care professionals to effectively educating the Hispanics (Journal of Cultural Diversity, 2012). “Health promotion is carried out by and with people, not on or to people” (Journal of Cultural Diversity, 2012). We as educators must have respect and not discriminate against the Hispanic population but work with them to teach them how to live healthier lives. Healthy People 2020 states that it is their dream to have a culture where all people live long, healthy lives. Health promotion means addressing the health disparities of the Hispanics so they can experience positive health
Healthy people 2020 “ establishes national goals and objectives for policy, programs, and activities to address the major health challenges facing our country today, and seeks to assure conditions in which people can be healthy, both now and for generations to come” (Secretary Advisory Committee, 2010, pg., 2). This initiative helps supports people on their health and wellbeing. It strives to identify potential health risks and help support improvement priorities. Healthy people 2020 have elaborated with different sectors to strengthen these policies by proving goals and objectives.
Part 2 - The most effective strategy for all the Healthy People initiatives is two fold: education and focus. There needs to be a broad level of focus and support from all levels of the government: local, State and Federal, in order for there to be a consistent message. Education begins at the elementary
In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be
National initiatives promote these interests, providing examples of ways citizens and the government work together to address the health and wellness needs of all people. Healthy People 2020 is the newest wave of an initiative established to improve the health and well-being of people across the country. Their goals are to help people of all ages around the world. This certain initiative has 600 objectives within 42 topic areas. Another initiative is The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. It directs the USDA to increase access to healthy foods for low-income children. The national call to action to promote oral health, healthy child care America, national health and safety performance standards for child care are other initiatives.
Upon reviewing the community vitality data I came to the conclusion that the health problem that a health education program would be most appropriate to address would be childhood nutritional health and fitness. I came to this conclusion after careful data analysis. Of the county’s adults (18+) 77% ate less than five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, this percentage is so high likely because of attitudes and habits these adults picked up when they were children. The second largest age demographic in the county is children aged 10 to 17 are overweight, six percent more than the state average, 88% of children age 10 to 17 are not meeting daily targets for fruit and vegetable consumption and 30% age 10 to 17 watch 3 or
Health promotion aims a wide range of targets at different levels in the community. The huge benefits resulted from health promotion and disease prevention efforts make many realize that this domain of health care is worth to be invested in. The focus is shifted evermore from the medical to the preventative approach, from treating the disease to avoiding the onset of it.
“The major goals of health promotion are to help people of all ages stay healthy, optimize health in cases of chronic disease or disability, and create healthy environments” (Pender et al., 2015). This health promotion project is designed to identify and reduce the risk factors associated with several illnesses and disease processes. This project will focus on changing lifestyle behaviors and providing up to date education for the patient to make the best informed decision regarding her environment, health behaviors, and developing a support system with her primary care physician.
