The film The Green Mile was originally written by Stephen King and later directed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the guards and inmates of a penitentiary’s Death Row during the great depression. There is a certain monotony that comes with working on Death Row and Paul Edgecomb, played by Tom Hanks, has become numb to the fact that he is paid to take lives; that is until John Coffey gets sentenced to death and is sent to Paul’s “green mile”. John Coffey is a very large black man that was accused of rape and murder of two little girls, and in the 1930’s having charges like that brought upon you was grounds for the death penalty, especially for a black man in the south.

One of the main themes in “The Green Mile” is death. It encapsulates the whole novel, leaving the reader to think deeply about their fate. It’s an obvious theme, considering the story takes place on death row. However, further analysis reveals a deeper meaning than men dying in the electric chair for their crimes. “And I think about all of us. Walking our own green mile; each in our own time.”(Pg 434) Paul said. The reader will discover that the Green Mile itself is a metaphor for death. To me Shawshank Redemption, seemed to be like any other prison film. A story of a prisoner’s tough life, when surrounded by the massive walls of a brutal American prison, treated as scum. In some genius way, they manage to trick the management and escape through a tiny tunnel and out as free men.

Although John may had been on death row, he made moral decisions throughout the film, even at his worst times. In The Green Mile, John Coffey was born with a gift; this gift allowed John to help heal people and also change the will and mind of the people he encounters. In the film, John first reveals his powers to Paul Edgecomb when he heals Paul’s urinary infection. After this event, Paul begins to see John as a good person, which leads to his suspicions about whether John actually did commit the crime for which he was convicted of. John uses his gifts for good throughout the film. Doing so, it shows that John himself, is a moral person. This shows a sense of morality within John, since at his worst times he is able and is willing to help people with their situations. John’s desire to help for the better good, portrays a righteous quality within John Coffey. In addition to John Coffey's decision to help others for the good of it, he had made a moral decision to go through with the execution even though he was innocent. Before John’s execution, John uses his powers to show Paul Edgecomb his innocence. As he does so, it makes Paul and the other guards hesitant on putting John in the electric chair. This inmate is John Coffey, who beyond his simple naive nature possess a supernatural gift. This gift is what introduces the correlation between Coffey and Jesus Christ.

'Shawshank Redemption' directed by Frank Darabont is a compelling film about the life of one of its prisoners, Andy. many film techniques were used through out the film as a clever way of conveying main themes. This essay is going to examine how Darabont used camera angles and colour effectively in this film to portray the idea of power.

The movie, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is based on a character Andy Dufresne. Andy is a young and successful banker who is sent to Shawshank Prison for murdering his wife and her secret lover. His life is changed drastically upon being convicted and being sent to prison. He is sent to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20-years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates. He becomes friends with Red, and they both comfort and empathize with each other while in prison. The story has a strong message of hope, spirit, determination, courage, and desire.

Color of Purple is a Novel by Alice Walker, published in 1982. It won a Pulitzer Prize in 1983. A feminist novel about an abused and uneducated black woman's struggle for empowerment, the novel was praised for the depth of its female characters and for its eloquent use of black English vernacular.

The story focuses on four cops patrolling the streets with the lead character of O’Donnell being a veteran cop struggling with both professional and personal issues. The script does a good job of showing what patrol officers go through. It’s similar to the film END OF WATCH.

Oliver Stone had his breakthrough in the film industry when he wrote the screenplay for Midnight Express (1978), directed by Alan Parker. The film was a hit and earned Stone his first Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a shot at directing a major studio movie, The Hand(1981). Stone's directorial debut was not a success, but he went on to write screenplays for the popular films Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Scarface(1983).

The Green Mile has a huge connection to the seven Catholic social teachings. The first one, human life and dignity, is very evident in the Green Mile. The main connection with this one is how Tom Hank’s character cares about John Coffey. Many people would not care or even given a second look to someone who is in prison and on death row but Paul, the guard, gets close to him. He ends up really caring about John Coffey and believes he is innocent. It shows human life and dignity because when he has to execute him, he believes he is going to hell and can’t live with what he has done. The film overall brings up the debate of capital punishment. To truly have respect for human life you cannot be in favor of the death penalty. This movie
