Mark Twain, an American writer, named the late 19th century, the ‘Gilded Age.’ This time frame is ‘gilded’ because the time was glittering with gold on the surface, but corrupt and rotten underneath. This was a time period full of greed and guile, filled with robber barons, speculators, and Buccaneers. Not only that, but there were many sneaky business schemes to get more income, improper politics, and many impolite displays. Although, it’s better to think of this time as modern America’s formative period where small companies were transformed into an urban society dominated by industrial corporations.

Rockefeller negotiated rates from the railroads which transported his and other competitors oils. Due to this, it was hard for Rockefeller’s competitors to stay in business. Soon enough, in 1892, the Supreme Court of Ohio declared the company illegal and had the company end in 1899. The company was reorganized as a holding company, the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. The United States Supreme Court declared that this company was an illegal monopoly and it was ordered to completely end in 1911.

Technological revolutions take lots of time to improve. There is a wide-variety of effect technology gives us and the effects extend to great length. In the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, the time of the Gilded Age, is known as the Industrial Revolution. The factory system, textile industry, railroads, the telegraph, and steam power were all developed in the Industrial Revolution. All of this technology influenced American manufactures to create new markets and technology. Most of the late-nineteenth century inventions were based on these early inventions, too. The railroads created a huge market for steel and delivery. The telegraph improved personal communications and would later improve to be the most useful communication device.
