An individual’s strengths can eventually become their greatest weaknesses. Their strongest traits can turn into their tragic flaws. A tragic flaw is a trait viewed as being favorable to a character at first, but it leads to their later downfall. It was often used in ancient Greek tragedies to show that mankind was susceptible to flaw. This was present in Sophocles 's tragedy, Oedipus the King. The protagonist of the tragedy, Oedipus, was not exempt from his own flaws. Oedipus’s traits of excessive pride and desire for knowing the truth were advantageous to him in the beginning, yet were the very things that contributed to his tragic downfall.

The Choragos, which is the voice of the people of Thebes, praise their king and outwardly show their respect towards him throughout the whole tragedy. Oedipus is the archetypal Greek tragic hero in the play because he is the original hero who had everything in his life: the throne, a wife, a family, and his people who praised him, but then he loses it all.
I think for Oedipus to receive this fate or prophecy may not have been fair. He probably did not think so either but during that time if you were given a prophecy, that was your fate and you had to accept it. I think that for him to receive this fate he must have done something to deserve it, although his parents received this prophecy before Oedipus was born. Then again fate is fate, and the gods are the gods, they are all powerful and what they say, goes. If I had received this fate and was in Oedipus’s situation I would have told my parents hoping there could be some mistake or a way they could help me to get through it. If Oedipus had have done this his parents may have told him the truth of his birth. To avoid this certain fate he would

In Sophocles’ play, Oedipus the king, Oedipus Rex fits the true definition of a tragic hero, especially by Aristotle standards. He is a vitreous man whose misfortune is brought about not by depravity, but by some error or frailty. Oedipus is highly regarded as being renowned and prosperous. In the play we can tell Oedipus is well renowned because the people pray towards him “Not judging you an equal of the gods” (Line 31), “you raised up our lives” (Line 39). And prosperous when Tiresias says “rich, through foreign lands” (Line 460) and again when Oedipus says “in wealth, kingship, artistry” (Line 385) “wins much admiration” (Line 386). Oedipus is imperfect like us because he is human and has human qualities. On his way to Corinth, Oedipus

The wealth and happiness they once had was real while it lasted, but now--weeping, destruction, death, shame--name any shape of evil you will, they have it all” (Sophocles 73 ). Oedipus was once a King, having both power and responsibility. By the end of the story Oedipus’ actions in Oedipus The King by Sophocles affect not only his life but others around him as well.
