The F.B.I. Essay

Throughout its more than hundred year history, the Federal Bureau of Investigations has been a very important agency to the United States. As a threat-based and intelligence-driven national security organization, the mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership to federal, state, and international agencies (“A Brief History of the FBI”). The Bureau’s success has always depended on its agility, its willingness to adapt, and the ongoing dedication of its personnel. But in the years since

I chose the Federal Bureau of Investigation for my career choice. According to the Mission and Priorities page on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s website, the purpose of the Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI is to, “Protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States (“Mission & Priorities”, n.d.). The FBI ensures this specific purpose by completing the following: “protect civil rights, combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises, combat major white-collar crime, and combat significant violent crime” (“Mission & Priorities”, n.d.). As of right now, “the FBI has around 35,000 employs which includes special agents and support professionals” (“Mission & Priorities”, n.d.).

The mission and values of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is up held with strong Constitutional values. Over the years since the FBI was created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. As a progressive during this time period Bonaparte applied his philosophy to forming the FBI with several corps of agents. His thought was that these men should have expertise and not political connections. With the U.S. Constitution based on “federalism” a national government with jurisdiction over matters that cross boundaries, such as interstate and foreign affairs.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has the reputation as the world’s premier law enforcement agency with a vision to stay ahead of the threat through leadership, agility, and integration. As an intelligence-driven and threat-focused national security organization, the mission of the FBI is to protect the American people by upholding the Constitution of the United States, defend the US against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats; uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the US; and provide leadership and guidance of criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, international agencies and partners. The FBI is hard work. They investigate bank robbery, copyright breaches, civil rights violation, bribery, extortion, kidnapping, various types of fraud, organized crimes, terrorist organizations, and suspected drug trafficking. They also have many different investigative programs. Although, it may seem the FBI knows about the majority of criminalistics situations; they have been doing this job for many years and many years to come. John continues, “The FBI originated from a force of special agents created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt (2).” This organization has been serving justice since the Roosevelt years in the early 1900’s. Everything the FBI is capable of, could not be demonstrated with perfection if it was not for their structure. This structure consists of being part of the U.S. Department of Justice, which is headed by the United States Attorney General. The authority they are granted are to enforce the law on a federal level (Sections 533 and 534, Title 28 of the U.S. Code). These are the ways the Federal Bureau of Investigation works from the agencies missions, history of the agency and the impressive structure of the agency, which makes them one of the major aspects of the federal law to the United States of America. To begin, the FBI has rich history and background. The FBI was created by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte. It was created in the year of 1908. The FBI has been up and running for about 107 years. By 1907 the Department of Justice most frequently called upon Secret Services to conduct investigations. It was 1892 when law enforcement was often political rather than professional. The FBI states, “ The FBI originated from a force of special agents created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt”. There is much more I could talk about. The FBI has been running for about 107 years which means they have a lot of papers.

This is only a brief description of the duties of the FBI which also consists of investigating bank robberies, white-collar crimes, and organized crime and drug syndicates. The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) administers the U.S. Criminal Code provisions concerning alcohol and tobacco smuggling and diversion. The ATF is also responsible for enforcing all federal laws relating to firearms, explosives, and arson.
