This paper will discuss the various ethical dilemmas facing school resource officers (SRO). This will include problems with 4th amendment protections of students, interviews and interrogations of juveniles, as well as, privacy issues expected by students and faculty. Other issues to be will also address two sociological theories, the Self Efficacy and the Modeling theory. I will also discuss how school discipline is being reclassified in to criminal behavior resulting in many children being classified as criminals due to minor behavior problems. Finally this paper will discuss the SROs role, should it be public servant, or crime fighter.

After reading all the material regarding Jeffery Bell, Darryl Forrest and Dustin Sillings all 3 whom were members of the Kansas City Police special unit known as (SCORE) Selective, Crime, Occurrence, Reduction Enforcement unit. There was a case where a police officer conduct affected his job. On June 26th, 2013 a Grapeland, Texas officer was fired because of his unethical behavior. Apparently, the police officer was at a party. The police officer allowed a female at the party to wear his gun belt with his loaded gun, ammunition and Taser still on the belt. The woman was holding an alcoholic drink while wearing the officer duty rig. A person at the party took pictures of the female wearing the gun gear and posted them on social media. Once several individuals saw the pictures online, they complained to the Chief of Police. Consequently, Chief Franklin terminated officer because his behavior went against the law enforcement code of ethics. Chief Franklin said, "All of our guys understand the ramifications of being irresponsible with their firearms, with their weapons and with their position in the city " (Beames. 2013).

Police officers are trained to read, write and analyze numbers. Herrera was a street cop like any other in a big city. His motivation was to get the guns and drugs off the streets. Ultimately it came down to getting the criminals by any means necessary. He longed for doing good in his community and he was given the chance to do so. It was clear the City of Chicago saw a reduction in crime and the Spec. Ops unit received multiple awards and citations for the actions. I can tell you that he did wrong and violated police ethics along with constructional right, but he did his job.

In this country we are seeing an increase in ethical violations in the field of law enforcement. I will go into detail about some of the main ethical issues we are seeing today and what can be done to prevent such acts from happening. When one officer is being unethical it has a huge effect on how the public views law enforcement as a whole. Many officers go undetected for a long time before getting caught, but an officer committing ethical violations will have their day it’s just a matter of time. In order to improve this growing problem we must first understand why there is such a problem in the field of law enforcement.

Police subculture undermines ethics and has a constant influence on officers’ decision-making process, which ultimately leads to misconduct. Police, like most professions, have a secretive yet unique type subculture because the lifestyles of its members are significantly different. Law enforcement officers tend to befriend other officers or people with similar roles within the criminal justice system. Many times, friendships extend to firefighters and other civil service personnel to include military members.

What are the standards in Police Ethics? By definition it is the Rules of conduct recognized in respect to police actions when dealing with a class of people, person or a particular group, culture, etc. In all the research I have done, books, articles and research papers I have read, I am hard pressed to find an ethicist without a political agenda or pure racist opinion, who believes that the policies should stand as written.
