The Effect that a Longer Summer Vacation Has on Students

Getting rid of summer break would hurt a lot of students; they do not have the patience to go to school during the school year—taking away what is supposed to be their vacation could possibly break them.

Dr. Matthew Lynch from, “Education New” states that, “Students tend to forget a lot during summer break, so a shorter time away from school might increase retention rates” (Watson). Dr.Lynch is saying that having a shorter summer break will tend more to the students, because they will remember and learn more than what a student who has the whole summer off.

Summer break is supposed to be a time of rest and rejuvenation for students. After nine months of hard work and challenging classes, one would think such a long break could do nothing but good for students; however, this is not the best way for young minds to learn. A three month break is far too long for children to go without proper education and supervision. Instead of a long three month break at the end of each school year, why not give students the same number of days off but spread them out more frequently throughout the year? Year-round education is a more efficient, globally competitive, and fair alternative to the traditional nine month school year.

If schools started all year round school students would have more stress. That long summer break gives students time to unwind and relieve stress. This break lets students forget about school and live their lives easier without all the homework, classwork, test, and projects. Students also get time away from all the troubles that other students may cause. This long summer break also gives students more time to have fun.

The first reason why kids should have a summer break is that it makes school less complicated. According to Jennifer Brozak, a disadvantage of having a year round school is that the school budget has to increase. They will need to have more fundraisers in order to keep the school going. If they neglect to get the amount of money they need they sometimes cancel and let the students have a summer break. In addition, teachers are having difficulty with planning lessons for students and grading papers in a short amount of time they have (Brozak). In addition, Brozak says, because of the short amount of time teachers have to grade papers they are prone to burnout. This is one of the reasons that schools should have a summer break because both teachers and students’ mental pressure because of work (Brozak). As a student, I can say that breaks will be necessary to recharge and prepare myself

The average school period is one hundred and eighty days with small breaks in between and a three-month break during summer to ease students’ minds and let them relax. The Board of Education should make all schools in the United States year-round to increase educational time and decrease the loss of knowledge over the breaks. It gives students the same time to relax and plan family vacations periodically throughout the year, but never creates the stress of changing sleep schedules that summer break changes. Not only is it a good way to enhance education, but it also is better for planning family events, positive effects on budget, academic achievement, and could decrease the absence rate of students.

This question has been asked many times with school board officials let’s look at the facts, Summer break started because the children of poor farmers would miss school in order to help their families harvest they would miss many days of school and wouldn’t be able to learn as much as the children whose families were wealthy. They eventually decided to shorten the calendar so that no one could miss school. Here in the 21’st century no one needs to miss school, nowadays a small amount of people have families that own farms but the children don’t have to miss school to work on them! Summer break is now a fun break, but do kids really need it? I believe they don't there are enough missed school days from three day weekends to spring break there really is no point to have the school calendar shortened anymore. So should we keep Summer?

While some might enjoy a three-month long summer break, it is in the best interest of the students’ grades to attend school all year long since this leads to a more motivated classroom atmosphere. Also, the students are more likely to remember material covered in class better if they are only gone six weeks instead of twelve weeks for the summer. As a result of retaining the material, students will benefit from better test scores. According to the NAYRE, “of thirteen studies of year-round-education performance since 1985…ten favored the year-round system over traditional schools and of those, seven found statistically significant learning gains by the year-round students” (Harp 2). The world we live in is becoming more of a global market, and American students need to be able to compete in the job market someday with people from all over. Their test scores and skills need to be cutting edge in order to be an active participant in this global market.

What do you do during summer break? Do you go on a long family trip, or do you have to get a job? Now imagine if those plans were ruined by year round schooling. Year round schooling is not beneficial for students and teachers because it can cause more stress, students get summer jobs, and people go on family trips and spend time with family and friends during summer break.

Summer vacation gives students plenty of free time, which can relief stress. It is a good thing to stay away from stress. Being stressed is not healthy, it takes away the body’s ability to fight infections, avoid injury, or to sleep and digest food properly (Scott). People with stressful jobs or lifestyle are kind of in danger, if they don’t get enough sleep and they are driving they have late reflexes, which leads to car accidents. The summer vacation is helping the students, because its keeping them safe and not work so hard they aren’t motivated to learn.

Also it gives those with less things to do all year round where in the old schedule they would go two months in a half doing nothing. Even some parents see summer vacation as a stressful obstacle to give

The three-month summer vacation block may sound great for planning vacations, but in reality, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. By having one large vacation block, parents have to compete in the workplace to get the appropriate time off and travel is more expensive because everyone else is traveling. Year round schooling offers more breaks and more opportunities for everyone to take a well-deserved vacation

Today, people on the Board of Education are considering the riddance of Summer break for many students. Many students, including myself, do not like this idea for many reasons. Spending seven hours a day, five days out of seven days a week, is very difficult and everyone needs a long break from it.

As a child, summer vacation was something I looked forward to with great anticipation. Breaking free from the doldrums of school, and spending roughly three months leisurely basking in the absence of academic responsibility, seemed like a right I had earned. Why would I not have? From kindergarten to the day I graduated high school that was the normal routine, and from everything I gathered and knew that was the way it had always been. As I grow older and become more aware of the ebbs and flows of the world around me, my thoughts have altered. Maybe adolescents should not be given such a significant break, and adopt the year-round school plan.
