The fantasizing film Inception directed by Christopher Nolan opened up many doors for individual’s to understand the brain’s vulnerability to new ideas while they are dreaming. The main character, Cobb, and the rest of his team open up an individual’s mind while they are dreaming, through each level of consciousness. Inception helps a person better understand that the nature of reality is within a persons mind. Christopher Nolan created the perplex concept of inception through the five levels of consciousness throughout the entire film.

In every great piece of art there is usually an inspiration of some sort that gave the artist influence on their production. In contemporary society, we often see modern artists use influences from past theories, ideas, designs, etc. Inception, the 2010 sci-fi action film, is a movie about illegal spying by entering the minds of certain individuals by sharing dreams. Many times, we don't realize when see something with our eyes that our brain stores that information away... rather we were aware of what we saw or not. Often our brain stores and processes that imagery in a subconscious format after the fact. This can have some interesting spiritual implications.

As you sleep your mind takes you to another place far away from the real world. You begin to dream. Over the night, you may have several dreams. In ancient Egypt, pharaohs had several interpreters to decipher their dreams as they believed they were messages from the gods (Lincoln, 1935, p.68). The ancient Hebrews believed that their dreams were tied to divine revelations as well. Native American tribes believed that dreams were a connection to their ancestors and used obtaining a vision from a dream as a rite of passage (Tedlock, 1981, p.324). Inception is a Sci- fi film that talks about some people who go into people’s dreams, stealing ideas/secrets from unconscious minds by pretending that the “mark”’s*(the person who they are trying to steal the idea from) dream is a reality. This changes when a business man, Saito hires them from stealing ideas to instead planting ideas inside the “mark”’s head. The mark this time is another businessman named fischer who inherited his father’s fortune after his death. Saito wants fischer to break up his business because they are competitors. This requires planting an idea in Fischers head that his father wants him to break up his business, also known as inception.

Two Google software engineers and an intern posed an unusual theory in a group article: Do computers have a capacity to dream? Likewise, Dave Gershgorn argues this very notion in his recent article. He says that in order to understand how computers dream, we first ought to educate ourselves on how computers work. Apparently, when the layers of artificial neural networks or ANNs process images, they overtime understand it. For instance, if a computer is given a million pictures of a fork, each layer in the ANN derives pieces of information and conceives the idea of a fork.

A contextualizing image (CI) is a powerful central image in a dream. A contextualizing image can be found in most dreams, and can have negative or positive emotions implied through the image. It can be seen as providing a picture for the dominant emotion of the dreamer.The image presented represents the overall feel of the dream, and contextualises the feeling portrayed. For example, dreamers who have experienced any serious traumatic event sometimes dream of being overwhelmed by a tidal wave. This appears to picture their feeling of terror and vulnerability.

The movie What Dreams May Come gives a rather positive view on the afterlife. I think most of the ideas and views shown in the film are related to many of society's main beliefs pertaining to death and the afterlife, but the views are left broad enough so they can relate to any specific religion. Personally, I have no concrete belief concerning the afterlife, or whether or not if there even is life after death, but I can see why many people would agree with many of the films perspectives. The movie is shown through Robin Williams's character, Chris Nielson who's first personal encounter with death is when his two children, Marie and Ian both die in a car accident. Four years later he dies himself after being hit
