One of the things people hate is to compare movies to books because they are too different from each other, or too similar and boring. Sometimes they are both too alike, and too different. The Devil's arithmetic is a great example when it comes to show the differences and similarities of a book, and a movie. If we didn't compare them then it would be easy to mix both of them up on what happened in the movie, and what happened in the book. In both the book, and the movie Hannah, who is tired of remembering her heritage, gets transported into the past during the time of the holocaust. In the book The Devil's Arithmetic, Jane Yolen, the author of the book, has Hannah meet Grace, and Shmuel first. They then go into a wedding where they are captured by the Nazis. In the movie The Devil's Arithmetic which was made after the book in 1999, has Hannah meet Rivka first who is Hannah´s cousin, and her friend. After they were captured in the book Hannah meets Rivka who tells her how to survive the camp. Then in the end of both the book, and the movie Hannah takes Rivka's place to die then she is brought back to her normal world. The biggest similarity between the book, and the movie is the theme. A huge difference between the two is that Hannah is old enough to drive in the movie, but in the book she is only thirteen years old. This change makes her a little more bossy with her personality. One of the biggest changes is that in the movie Grace is not a character, but in the book she has a strong influence on Hannah. There are also only two people that are Hannah's age in the movie, but in the book Hannah meets four people that are her age. One major thing the movie changed is that Hannah starts to have a love life with another person. In the when Hannah returns to her normal world she wakes up in a bed, but in the book when she returns she is standing and closing the
Despite the differences of the book and movie there is also some similarities. The allision demonstrated between the two was one of the similarities. They both show Hannah traveling in time and waking up back into her original time just like the main character in the Wizard of Oz. The characters Hannah and Schmuel both stay the same. Her and her family live in the United States, as their ancestors had traveled to America after the conclusion of World War II and the Holocaust. The movie goes back in time to 1942 due to Hannah’s lacking interest in learning about her family’s past. The time travel proves as a lesson to Hannah, as it takes her through t he Holocaust with her own family members. Throughout the movie, there are several accuracies and inaccuracies concerning history. Overall, the movie is very precise in reenacting history in order to portray its message about the Holocaust.
While the novel “their eyes were watching god” and the film by the same name were very much alike they were also very different. The movie while touching on major issues that are parallel to book also misses some other points. While the book touches heavily on nature and janies innerself as discovered through nature the movie lacks the symbolism that the book was heavy with, Tea Cake and Janie's relationships are changed and the janies trial is not included in the film either.

In the movie it states”Lets begin at the begging I'm Rivkah and this is your aunt or my mom mina”(Deitch 14:32)in the movie Rivkah is her cousin and she is the one who helps her all the way in town and where to go until she gets sick and her mom dies she becomes sad and depressed then it's Hannah who helps her get through it and live. In the book she had a little brother his name was Aaron. Aaron was a big part of the story if you ask me. In the beginning the story he was always there. When they were going into aunt Eva's houses they were fighting on who would press the elevator buttons. But in the movie they just walked up the steps and knocked on the door and Hannah was an only child. In the book it really took off when they were playing a game of hide and seek and hannah said ready or not here I come.
